Heard a new one today when talking to some hobbyists.

“Depending on where you live, it will take more or less salt to reach the desired salinity and this throws off parameters.”

Altitude affects the specific gravity of air; I wonder if people have confused that with the specific gravity of water.

The example was one bucket of salt will read 8.4dkh in Minnesota at 1.026 but will read 7dkh in Texas (made up numbers to make a point)
