I put a fox face in a 75g tank years ago and it was the most aggressive fish I’ve ever had, I had to take him back. Any time I worked on the tank or put my hands in, he would rapidly swim left to right, stir up sand storms and attack me. I understand it’s not the norm…but I’ve experienced it.
One of my percula used to attack the hand every time. In this case, it was just a phase.

My Foxface is the biggest laziest fish in my tank. He'll literally get between my tangs when they're getting into it and flair his fins to calm them down. I've always considered him the peace keeper of the tank, not at all aggressive.

No trying to encourage a fight, but I kept a foxface with a couple of clowns. We called him spike, because "he" would frequently flick up the dorsal as a show of aggression. That was the worst of it. They actually became friends, it seems.
No way that was my old foxfaces name too! Pretty cool

I’ve heard many times they are the peace keeper!

What size tank do you have? Maybe this is his way of telling you your tank is too small with the clowns? Maybe he has sold the fish to someone else and this is his way out lol? Just looking at other possibilities. I have never seen an aggressive foxface towards anything than other algae eating fish.
Temp. 75 gal. Foxface was only about an inch and a half big

I’m pretty sure he has another customer who was willing to pay significantly more for the fish than he was going to sell it to you for.

But seriously, how big is your tank? A foxy face will get big and will be happier in a large tank.

It is very hard to assign motivation but I hope your LFS is more respectable than my crazy mind thinks.

Definitely agree with this, unfortunately this is the closest store (1hr away) that carry’s salt water supplies and fish. My point was, I was simply not allowed to buy the fish
Order elsewhere if you don't believe in that stores husbandry practices. I bet they have been observing the fish and know more about it than you do at this point. Kudo on store. Sucks for you. Online order the fish. It will probably be cheaper especially if needing other items . Snails and the like.

We need to have a conversation with the manager!
Wait a minute. Were you there with any small children? The clerk may have been protecting them from getting into a fight with the poisonous fish!

I forgot Foxes had poisonous spines and so I hand caught and released a few of them before a buddy reminded me. They seemed like very docile creatures ime, and I believe they would have to be in fear for their lives or startled to get aggressive and spine something.

None of these stories make sense, but some of them are true. You were kind to let the store decide what you can’t have and not get aggressive about it. You and the Foxface are both very good tempered and I think you deserve one.

Probably, only reason I wanted to go there was because of their 30 day guarantee, any suggestions for online? I was thinking Dr Tim’s QT fish, but from what I’ve heard people still do a medicated QT either way so what’s the point in paying extra imo

No kids! but that’s a good thought. Yeah I’m sure it was just who I was working with because I previously bought one there a couple months back (died from ich :/)

I use this place for QT fish if I want to add them directly to my display. If you sign up for the newsletter, it will email you before new fish are being added. high demand fish sell in seconds though. They do take some custom orders on another forum.

I don't pay extra cause it could just die. I order it cheap and do my due diligence. I like ny aquatics or reefs 4 less.

I’ve order fish twice from Detroit Reef Club and they came in excellent health. Anthias, a damsel, and a wrasse

They have a very impressive store and website (with virtual tour! This place is nice) and they have a lot more in the store than on the website. If you contact them I’m sure they can probably get you a fox face

Snatch the clown out of your tank and bring it to the LFS. Then, without warning, drop it in the same tank as the Foxface and yell BOOM!

I’d agree with many of the posters that there’s no issue there. I have 2 clowns - they stay in their little corner until I feed the tank. The Foxface pays them no attention at all and they’ve been together for almost 2 years. My FF is a total skittish wuss and hides as soon as I approach the tank.

My tank is a 75 gallon.
