This probably could have had a more helpful title but here we are.

I occasionally get fussy hammers. My issue is this, I want to dip them but really don't want to mix up a 4 gallon batch of KFC dip, but do want to be accurate about amounts, especially with the antibiotics.

Could I mix the dry and wet, leaving out the tank water, and store it?

How long would I have to use it?

I don’t know enough about the specific product, but if they are drugs I would recommend against it. Drugs are often much more stable in dry form and may have a surprisingly short shelf life after reconstitution with water. There may also be interactions between drugs in the wet and dry that make them unstable.

That said, with more details we could determine the likelihood of these interactions.

This is an extremely complex mixture with a lot going on, notably iodine which can be quite reactive and is not very stable after dissolution. Without any specific stability studies to test compatibility of the components I wouldn’t speculate about any shelf life other than the few minutes at point of use. That said, maybe I’m being overly conservative due to my background as a formulator. Coincidentally this is exactly the type of question I get asked at work on a regular basis and the stakes are quite a bit higher when I’m representing the pharma company talking to a hospital regarding an oncology drug cocktail, for example…

Thanks for your insight. I could get a pill crusher and weigh out the antibiotics, everything else (except the chemiclean, which I may not have) should be fairly easily divisible by 8 for a half-gallon batch.

It's true my hammer is less important than my Hipec patient. (I'm not the one you're talking to in that case though.)
