I'm debating on getting a Large Angel for my 270g DT. This will be a full blown SPS/LPS dominated tank. I have narrowed my choices to these 3. A Blueface, Navrachus (Blue Girdle) or a Regal Angel. My concern is will they have a field day with my corals? I know the Navarchus is the more mellow one out of the 3 but I really like the Blueface. LMK what everyones experience are with these beauties and SPS/LPS.

TIA, Sarang

I had a Navrachus Angel in my sps dominated tank. He left the LPS corals and montipora's alone but went crazy on my acros. i ended up building a trap and putting an acro in it to lure him in to catch it.

Wow really!? That sucks big time! Of all the Angels I see most in a full blown reef tank are the Navarchus. I really want a Blueface but I have too many expensive corals for it to potentially make a quick snack out of them LOL.

Yeah i didnt have it long i think he was good for two months and then went crazy and gone as fast as i could catch him. I must say though i bought it when it had its adult coloration maybe if you aquire a juvinile it would be a differnt story idk.

Feed a lot, stock heavy on fish, and add him once your corals are good sized and you do not plan on adding a whole lot more. Angels are incredibly smart, curious fish, so when you add something new, they're bound to "test it out" for ya ;)

FWIW Pomicanthidae are my favorite family of fish and I'll always have at least one in ALL of my aquariums, no matter what invertebrates I'm keeping.

Thanks for the info! Which ever Angel I go with it will be in its juvinile stage. Right now my 270 just has a few corals in it along with an Achilles tang, Chevron tang, Powder Blue tang, Purple tang, 12 chromis, Scotts fairy wrasse and a Gold African midas blenny. All my other corals are in my 40b ATM. So should I wait to transfer all the corals in 1st before introducing the Angel of my choice? I do plan on adding 10-15 chalk basslets or threadfin cardinals, a couple Leopard wrasse, couple mystery wrasse and some gobies.

Yep... you'll have much better success rate (generally speaking). If you can wait, grow out your coral and add a juvi into your full-blown display after QTing him.

Regarding Mystery wrasses, don't try multiples - it won't work. I highly recommend adding him last too as they become very aggressive over time once established. Don't let me talk you out of him though, they're BY FAR my favorite wrasse!

I've had a mystery wrasse in my 40b. Unfortunatly it decided to go carpet surfing one day and to his luck my dog (Boston Terrier) just happened to be there when it went surfing. My Fiance was like Cupid get that leaf out of your mouth! Well upon closer look it wasn't a leaf LOL it was my Mystery Wrasse. Also too I have a friend that has 3 of them in his 150g for 2 years now with no problem.

Being in this hobby it has taught me to be patient so I will wait to add it. After all I waited almost 4 years to upgrade my 40b to the 270g.

Yes really.... They are quite cool with each other.

Does anyone else have any experience with angels and corals. Would like to know what most is seeing in their tank.

As nice as angels are, I had a hard time watching them nip on my corals and getting them out of my 450 was miserable- I had a Regal, Narvarchus and Chrysurus.

I love my corals more LOL but the Angels are some beauties! Hmmmm I don't think throwing in a $150 fish into a reef tank with thousands of dollars in corals would be a good thing! Man this totally bites! Between the the Regal and Navarchus which one was more destructable.

Navarchus for me- but it just took the Regal a little longer to acquire a taste and then the Chrysurus.

Yeah I already have a fish trap. I had to get one to catch a sixline in the 270 that was beating up everything in the tank. That guy had all my fish cornered! Everytime a fish swam out into the open he torpedos them LOL.

I can't share much experience with large angels yet, but this type of thread is always interesting. I'm going to try a Flagfin here shortly. I'm going to buy on the smaller side of the "healthy size" range and since I do have anthias going into the tank, the fish will be fed multiple times a day. If you do go with it, good luck!

Yeah i'm still debating. I have so much money in corals. Just beating my self whether to take the risk for one of these beauties. I havn't transfered much corals from the 40b to the 270 yet. I just put some common and hardy corals in there to see how they'll do.
