Junior's Aquatic Photography How-To (The Basics)

Gary, I am going to be at the Rockford Fest...where do I sign up and can I paypal the payment. I am picking my camera up Monday from the factory...luckily for me there is a Canon place in Elk Grove Village...my camera didn't work after dropping and splashing coffee incident but I was able to take it there and they got it fixed in one day. They have offered me an upgrade to either of the following cameras but I don't know anything about them. I can up grade to either a EOS Digital Rebel XT (silver) for $150 or a Power Shot G9 for $125. I would just wonder if my Macro lenses and filters from my Pro1 would fit either of those models. Maybe if I take my filters and attachments to a camera shop I could find out. Either way, I LOVE taking pictures and use my camera daily...I just need some basic info to figure out what I'm doing. I love hummingbirds and dragonflies and besides my reef tank, that's what I take the most pictures of. Does anyone here have either of those camera's or know anything about them. Thank you so much for the info and help....Gary, I need to see a pic of that Acan we traded for "Bugs". who is doing fine and getting VERY fat by the way!!

The G9 is closest to the PRO1 out of the 2 you listed, but the Rebel XT would be the better choice to me. THe Rebel is a DSLR, so you can upgrade the GLASS and get a real Macro lens, or a REAL Telephoto, or a REAL Wide Angle. You can also get a REAL flash too! (Can you tell that the XT is a REAL camera? LOL!!)

It would really be a steep learning curve, but once you get it, the Rebel will be a much more versatile camera then the G9 would. However, the G9 would be easier right out of the box.

I am lucky enough to know both Jr. & Poseidon.
and even more lucky to be tutored by Jr. for pic taking.
Maybe after a few years I can get to their level (OK, well @ least 1/2 LOL).

Thanks for the input Poseidon...I guess for the money the Rebel seems the way to go. Since I need to learn anyhow, starting from scratch wouldn't be that much of a step back to tell the truth. I'll call Canon tomorrow and see if they still have the Rebel for exchange.

Nina, Yes, go with the DSLR. You'll be much happier in the long run.

I got in Gary...all paid up. I was looking at the info on the sheet I got from Canon and they show it as the EOS DIGITAL Rebel XT...that's different than a DSLR (showing my lack of knowledge here for sure) isn't it. If it is the one you are thinking of I can pick it up Monday and than bring that one with me to the workshop correct? If it's not I'll probably just stick with with one I already have. Should I bring my lenses too. Thank you so much for the info...I'm glad I got in.

Nina, glad you could get in. That camera is a DSLR (see link below). Yes, bring it to the workshop. We'll have no trouble getting you headed down the right path.

Junior is a personal friend of mine. Everytime I see him take a pic it makes me feel more clueless than I already am :frusty:

So it seems like a canon 24-70 2.8L is the way to go.

As a beginner whats the difference between that and my 16-35mm 1:2.8L
