Good night sweet tank. Until Monday!
PXL_20230930_003226073.jpg

P.s., did a bubble algae sweep right before leaving and picked off about 10 bubbles. Most of them sank right to the sand. They were heavy from coraline encrusting over them. Curious.
Nice! Very, very nice! What are these lights? Looks like the TMC ones ; although wouldn't think you could source them in the US (.. or get these results!!)

Noopsyche K7 minis. 60watt lights on par or a bit better than AI Prime 16HDs. 3 over a tank like this gives great coverage and PAR.

I struggled a while with the Eheim. Finally set the door to exactly the width for TDO small pellets to drop a decent amount (between two stops) and super glued it in place.

This one seem more consistent to you?
Less likely to let moisture in the barrel.

I also have eheims on my tanks. Only issue is the timers tend to go out of sync after a while.

Well, I did a water change, finally!

Unfortunately one of the acros was knocked over and the clowns' candy can was knocked over, and I had no time to fix it. And I spotted an Aiptasia hiding in a crack. No time, gotta get to LAX. Off to Senegal!

Farewell, sweet tank. Good luck with my office mates next week!

Not much to update. I'm in Senegal this week, so tank is in the hands of my officemates. Did a data video call yesterday to check on the tank (thanks Google Fi, excellent coverage in Dakar!). I kind of miss Africa. Wonder how difficult it would be to set up a 6ft tank in Tanzania or Mozambique...

I mean, I know it's heresy, but that 6 ft tank in East Africa better be a darn cichlid tank, hahaha.

Maybe multiple tanks? That wouldn't be weird would it? People have more the one tank in this hobby?

I hear a lot about fish/clam collection in the Red Sea, but no idea what's off the Eas African coast from Mozambique to Kenya. Would be cool to have an E. African biotope tank!

There are a ton of awesome African species that so rarely make it to the hobby. Cirrhilabrus sanguineus is supposedly the most expensive wrasse while I would love a Macropharyngodon cyanoguttatus.

Also I also need to get back to Africa. Really miss it.

Back from travel. Now, let's see the damage. No major disasters, but not rushing to conclusions yet.

1697219256866.jpeg

As you can see, lot of space on the SPS island all of a sudden.
1697219295198.jpeg

Birdsnest, which I was planning on removing and fragging anyway, is now on the sand bed. That setosa and hammer are not in good spots for the birdsnest--I'll have to fix this today.

Some of the sand bed zoas have traveled a long way, too. That purple/green ring zoa colony that is next to the oxides WAS way to the left, beyond the border of this picture.

Sand in the corner has shifted a lot. Don't know if it was due to snails, wrasses, or maybe just the gyre shifting it at an exponential rate.
1697219427183.jpeg

Note also that the bubblegum monti digitata has shifted right under the space invader pectinia. Lucky actually, because it appears that the monti is out of range of the pectinia's sweepers. I'll move the monti up to the SPS island today.

1697219537675.jpeg

My poor octospawn seems to be in its last throes. Been diminishing slowly for months now. I might just break it off and try a different area to see if that perks it up a bit.

1697219639995.jpeg

Candy cane fell off its rock. Again. I'll take this opportunity to clean off the vermetids.

In happier news:
1697219685374.jpeg

The white zombies are coloring up very nicely, finally!
1697219718740.jpeg

Magicians still look great and are all open now (half were closed when I left).
1697219754732.jpeg

And the utter chaos that looked like they were going to melt on me have opened back up and looking better. I'll clean off the vermetids between them--maybe that's why they've been sad.

1697219846773.jpeg

Have some new hidden cup corals popping up.
1697219873007.jpeg

Less exciting, some of the gulf-species-possibly-aiptaisa-but-less-invasive-than-normal showing up. They don't bother me all that much, but if I start seeing a lot, time to make an example of a few of them. There is one real aiptasia sitting underneath one of my acros that needs to be dealt with.

Also, looks like I got a split from the RBTA!

Just Pixel 6a camera + Orphek clip-on lenses. Colors are a little off from the eye, but not too bad.

Photo dump time!

The birdsnest, stylo and goldenrod anacro are doing insanely good. I'm actually worried about the goldenrod, because the other two are growing into it, physically touching now.
1697494403582.jpeg

Monti has a new home. The other birdsnest was knocked over, so I didn't have to worry about fragging it after all!
1697494453958.jpeg

Now why did the green one decide to be the most phallic coral in the tank?

BTAs are happily dominating the top of BTA/Zoa island:
1697494514425.jpeg

Speaking of growth, the mushroom section is seeing some major enlargement of the green carpet rhodactis and this mess of fire rhodactis seems to be splitting again:
1697494577607.jpeg

Still one of my favorites:

1697494595237.jpeg

Gorgonian is nearly at the water surface now. Setosa working its way up, although wrasses keep moving sand beneath it which is making it sink a bit:
1697494642533.jpeg

P.s., that scratch in the glass brings me infinite sadness.

Very happy with the zoa strategy. I wanted to glue them down onto different knobs of the fiji rock so that they have some isolation, and they seem to be spreading in a nice localized fashion. Now if I could only get to all the rest of the zoas in the sand bed and put them on the rocks!
1697494712751.jpeg

Meanwhile, in the land of forgotten toys corner of the tank:
1697494760334.jpeg

I still love this pavona. It is growing slowly, but looks awesome. Finally starting to encrust over the putting that's holding it down.
1697494813748.jpeg

1697494911521.jpeg

Leathers doing well:
1697494926696.jpeg

And my goodness, this trachy has gotten HUGE. I'm not sure what to do with it now, maybe carve out some more space somewhere.
1697494966655.jpeg

For reference, here it is next to the button scoly:
1697494989209.jpeg

Here is was in January next to the same button scoly.. ignore the GHA farm in the Evo:
1697495193014.jpeg

1697495202908.jpeg

So my next big adventure is to install the Simplicity 4-head doser this week! Bye bye Reef Factory!

Everything is looking great. The contrast of the birdsnest and stylo compliment each other well. I agree on scratches with IM tanks. My old 20g got scratched using a nano flipper scraper. I’ve switched to the Tunze care magnet and I think that one might have caused some light scratches that only show when algae grows on the glass. Thinking of using the generic Mr Clean pads going forward. Good luck with the growth!
