Hi all, I have a question I’m hoping those that have cared for these eels will chime in. As the title says, can a Japanese Dragon, Fimbriated yellow head and Banana eel be housed together in the same aquarium? I would love a dedicated eel tank 200-300 gallons with my 3 favorites. If all 3 are around the same size, 10-12” at introduction would they be ok. Based on my research the Fimbriated would probably be the most aggressive of the three. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

@HAAAAAAAA @littlefoxx Are both more experienced then me with eels at this point.
I dont have experience with those three eels, however I have a jeweled moray, snowflake moray, white eye moray and just added a zebra moray together in a 300 gallon. They all get along, they all hang out together for the same burrows but also do go to their own holes too. I thinks it would work as long as you have lots of room for them to have burrows together and separate to give them options. My jeweled by far is my most aggressive of the three, he will brawl with the others over food if I dont feed him first on feeding day. So I feed him first and when he goes back in the burrow with his food Ill feed the others as they come out for food. But from what Ive seen with my now four eels, they get along just fine and seem to enjoy eachother’s company. Here are some pictures of them hanging out together!

From my knowledge, the dragon moray is indeed quite aggressive, the fimbriated is a lot more agressive than the dragon and the banana would be the more docile (less aggressive fangtooth.

In my opinion, you would be able to keep the dragon and the banana together for quite some time if you put them together in the same tank with ample space, but I am not so sure with the fimbriated.

I currently have 6 moray eel's, tessalata, highfin moray, white eyed moray, red sea white spotted moray, zebra moray, mottled moray

Here is my experience, the tessalata who currently lives in my 210 gallon is the only one in the tank because he refuses to have any tankmates be it either fish or other eels, i tried to keep the red sea white spotted moray with him but he was brutally bitten by the tessalata.

The more aggressive a species is, the more lesser the chances there are of keeping them together, you may keep them for a few months or even years but there's still that risk and it's upto you to take it or not, but i hope you the best

1: But the tips I could give you would be to put all the eels in the same time in the tank to give them an opportunity to find their own dens and territories

2: try to bring them in as small as possible

3: as many hiding spots as possible

4: a fangtooth would be more suitable with a pebble tooth than another fangtooth since there's still risk

I don't have a ton of experience with eels, but I did have a fimbriated eel several years ago. I can echo what @HAAAAAAAA said about their aggression. This guy did not tolerate ANY additions to the tank. He ate an 8" tang that I thought would be plenty big to avoid predation. Nope. Although it's a very cool looking fish, I think I would consider a different moray if you do want to have 3.

Thank you for the information, it’s greatly greatly appreciated! I found online someone that kept a banana and dragon together successfully. Another who had a fimbriated with a tessalata but I figured the dragon and fimbriated probably wouldn’t get along. My fimbriated arrived the other day and is in quarantine so that limits my options now that I already have her so she’s home though I’m not sure if it’s male or female. I would like to stay at only 2 aquariums one of which has fish and the other a dedicated eel tank. Do you think the fimbriated and banana would get along? Would anything get along with a fimbriated besides a tess?

Thanks for the info, yeah that’s the conclusion I’m coming to based on the info I am receiving. She’s small currently maybe 10” if that. I’m coming to the conclusion that her and my panther grouper may be tank mates and that’s it. With the cost of a banana eel and dragon I don’t want to risk losing one, most likely the banana. Also I don’t think the wife would be happy with 3 aquariums lol. Though it would be nice if the fimbriated and banana would get along but I’m sure that’s wishful thinking.

I would say no to the banana, it will most likely be a bloodbath.

If there is a chance, i would consider a pebbletooth (zebra moray) or a snowflake.

The zebra moray is quite beautiful and most likely has the best chances aswell as a snowflake, but when it comes to long term i would recommend a zebra since they grow larger than the snowflake hence lower the risks

Well that settles it lol. I think she will be solo or play roulette with which fish she will tolerate. I have an aggressive panther grouper and domino damsel that I need to move so maybe those three will get along. I will have to pass on the dragon and banana as I don’t want to get rid of my Fib she’s awesome, feisty as hell, so aggressive at first but warming up to me. I want at least one aquarium with fish and corals and my main displays currently has ghost, my ghost ribbon eel so it’s a done deal at this point. Thank you for the information and money save, definitely appreciated!

You remind me of the time when i first had the tessalata, he even swallowed a 8 inch grouper of mine Lol, that's when I was starting to realise that there are limits to certain species, so the only method I could've thought of was to get more tanks and that was what I did haha

I doubt about the domini damsel since he could be caught when he is a asleep at night as for the grouper I am sure that they will stay for awhile until the eel grows big enough in the future which will most likely be in 3 to 4 years so I am sure that you still have a lot of times to maybe convince your wife for more tanks haha

Oh geez and I have a small yellow belly that I do not want eaten so she will have her own tank. I would love 3 aquariums, a mixed reef and 2 predator tanks or one big enough so everyone ignores everyone lol. That would probably take 1000 gallons which I do not have the space for. The wife’s not opposed to me keeping eels or aquariums, what concerns her is possible aquarium failure and the amount of water in our basement. I’ve learned to research and when I think I’ve researched enough, research some more before spending any money and saving myself future headaches, a lesson my grouper is teaching me everyday! At this point I’m going to put my fib after quarantine in a 225 gal with a panther grouper, domino damsel and maybe a clown trigger, see how that goes. Put the dragon eel and banana eel on the back burner for now which is cool save myself a lot of money I can spend on corals. I will look into a zebra based on your recommendation. Never researched those so I will have to check them out.
