Ahoy all, I purchased this anemone as a black widow anemone. When it arrived I emailed the seller thinking they had made a mix up, but was informed that this is a black widow anemone and that the difference between photo and what I received was just a difference of photography. I'm about 99.99% sure this is just a rainbow bubble tip anemone but could I get a sanity check here?

They're all just quadricolors. Lighting, equipment, even the animal's mood, can change the color. WYSINWYG.
Sure, but this was the product photo. Given I know whenever you shop with vendors they're using professional lighting, high end cameras, taking top down photos, and deep actinic lights, I can't by any stretch of the imagination see what I received as anything other than a standard rainbow bubbletip anemone.

Even with filters that still wouldn't look like a black widow. How long has it been in your tank? I know this can affect colors and what not. But I can't see it changing that much. When I bought my rainbow BTA is looked the same from the LFS after a week of being in my tank.

The picture was taken about an hour after it got into my tank

I'd question it too. I literally got an 'acid wash' in today and it's not nearly as green as the picture. In fact its dang near transparent. But I kind of expect that when ordering this stuff online... unless you can see it in the store you never really know.

Your anemone is under stress right now so it will not have the best coloration. Optimize his condition first then you can see. black widow has the significant “web” instead of a lot of green. And of course the red coloration.

Fair enough, I'll give it some time. I was under the impression that stress made them paler, not have completely different colors.

doesnt look red. who sold it to you?
I don't want to take shots at anyone so I don't really plan to call names. I genuinely believe its just a case of a mistake where someone told them something different. But as suggested I'll give it some time to see if the colors change.

Every black widow i saw had white sparkles. Not in climps, but spread out and about. They really shoot out at you. Once you see a black widow in person, you'll always know if its a rose, bw, or rbta.

Even @JoJosReef bw is very prominent with them.

What I believe the case was is that the original source told them it was a black widow bubbletip anemone. They then sold it to me as a black widow bubbletip anemone. When I pointed it out, they went back over everything to see if it was a clerical mistake, but they did in fact ship me what they had intended to. I don't think there's a bit of ill intent. They're a super trustworthy vendor that I and others have purchased from before and I've never seen a single negative against them. I just was hoping to get secondary assurance that I was correct before pushing harder in my claim that I was sent the wrong anemone. My instinct is to take photos and immediately report on receiving if anything is off. I've brought it to their attention, but I'll push and follow up after its settled in given that others have said that shipping stress can affect color. I'm still reasonably certain that its just a regular rainbow bubbletip anemone but Ill give them the benefit of the doubt and let it acclimate to its new environment first.

So to my knowledge, a black widow should have a white webbing on its mantle surrounded by dark flesh (under blue light). It Should be mostly red definitely no green in it. The tentacles can have white speckles. They are beautiful even without a filter on the camera. That is my experience anyway. Beautiful nem either way.
