interesting. where i live we run de humidifiers. ive often wondered why i couldnt just use that water for top off. dump a couple of gallons a day down the drain....

Concern is the metal condensers may release metals and there’s plenty of dusty grunge on them.

"Spot-Less" water is just DI
I assume they would use some sort of membrane system to remove large particles and things such as chlorine, salt etc or this wouldn’t be pure water? And would be a waste of time to just use DI resin? I guess I could send a sample off to be tested against a home RODI system

That’s awesome. I don’t know why we are discussing cost… I don’t think the OP ever set out to save money. Its a convenience he seems more than willing to pay for. Like lots of things in this hobby.

Di water can be higher in quality than a home ro/di, depending on the source water. But it need not be, of course. Labs create 18 Megaohm ultra pure water this way, but traces of neutral organics can get through. I’m not sure how they deal with chlorine. Probably pass the incoming water over some GAC.

Could you get to 0 ppb TDS water without it? I wish I could see inside one of their systems but someone I bumped into this week said they’re very intricate and they’re quite secretive.

Sure. 0 ppm tds is not really that pure for a lab to use, and they use di.

Thank you and Yes I do think the other things have been overlooked in my post, such as the space I don’t have for a system 24/7, the convenience and time saved for getting/ making pure water.

Also can anyone guarantee the water they’re using for their reef from their home RODI system is lab grade?

Well, it is not, typically, so I wouldn’t make that claim.

No, you just need to be there when the guy is changing the filters, heard they are just like a big rodi system inside, not just di.

I personally bought, on finance a Pure Reef RO $1500 400GPD Boosted 6 Stage RODI unit after my first year of using literal rain water mixed with a high quality salt-mix called Kirby's premium SPS sea salt to compensate.
Now I have total peace of mind with my water, I can make my own pretty much on demand, my reef system is only about 60 gallons so you could say it's overkill but I realized back then that I would want to upgrade one day, or even add multiple additional tanks so all in all, I'm happy with the investment.
The biggest con would be the RODI unit maintenance in paying around $450 for the kit to replace the units filtration. But the rate of which you do that is dependant on how much you use the unit so really, you're getting your worth out of what you buy when it comes to RODI units.
IMO it's kind of like buying an overkill Filter Roller. It might be more expensive and take up more room and cost more to maintain, but the rolls will also last longer, making you change them less giving you more time.
