Interesting read about Cipro
https://reefbuilders.com/2023/04/10/managing-tissue-necrosis/
I caught a portion of a Tidal Gardens video where Than said they were dosing Cipro in all their tanks. And if I'm not mistaken he said they we dosing all the time. I was half paying attention and did not watch the whole thing. I figured I would watch it when I had more time. Went to their channel and the video was pulled? Probably caught hell from the your going to create a super bug crowd.

I believe that was in response to to a superchat question I asked and Than said they use Cipro and noticed that their issues with acans (micromussas) went away.

Since then he's been oddly evasive about the topic.

Maybe that's why and he just doesn't want to deal with the ***** coming at him or dealing with the controversy.

Can't blame him

In Tank Cipro treatment simplified. This is used for brown jelly disease. Can be use for other things like torch bacteria infection. This is how I did it simplify from the Original thread. I have to give credit to the original thread because they help me treat brown-jelly disease in my tank and help my torches recover. Many thanks if the original see this.

BEWARE
Do this at your own risk.

Making concentration for dosing intank.
Add 500mg tablet into 50ml of rodi water. Mix well. If possible store in a dark container or anything that is not clear so cipro doesn’t degrade. When mixed store in fridge.

Calculate how much
(Amount tank water in liters) multiple by (.125) divide by 10. In mL.

for example
284 liters x .125 divide 10= 3.55 mL

This is how much you dose in ml every night. Turn off skimmer and take out carbon. Turn on skimmer during the day when lights on if you want but can be left off. This can kill some of good bacteria so recommend adding bottle bacteria after treatment.

Reapply some bacteria using biospira or Dr. Tim’s after treatment. Add carbon. Can also do a water change if you like, if reapply bacteria do water change first then reapply bottle bacteria.

What about the fish? Any negative affects on the fish and other inverts?

No ill effects, only thing is I notice die off of coralline algae, to be honest I hate coralline algae and cleaning it up. I take this as a plus lol. Used to love coralline algae when beginning hobby now just hate it. I dislike maintaining it with the equipment and glass. It would clog the equipment and make perform poor. The coralline can still survive and repopulate but it kill most that u see a difference.

2 weeks after the treatment.

Just want to share a quick update on my tank. 6 days of in-tank cipro treatment, skimmer set to dry skimming (merely for oxygenation), removed carbon, turned off UV.

It worked!! Frogspawn and torches fully recovered. On day 1 of treatment, brown jelly was visibly hanging out of frogspawn’s mouth.

I opted for in-tank because isolated treatment wasn’t working for me for some reason.

Lost 17 torch heads (prior to in-tank treatment)
3 hammer heads
1 big chunk of walled frogspawn (same as mentioned above. was able to save a part of it)

But was able to save my Indo torch and prized heads of hammer garden.

No detrimental effects on fish or other inverts.

Wish I had done it earlier.

Is there a way to treat the wastewater that has been treated with cipro to make it inert? I don’t like the idea of pouring out antibiotics down the drain even if i know its less than what would get peed out if a human was treated.

Not at home for the scale we are talking about here. Broad spectrum heat stable antibiotics are notoriously difficult to properly dispose of. Canada had the right idea banning it for aquarium use with out a prescription.

I would love to hear about anybody’s experience with this, this will be my first time using Cipro.
I've used Cipro for In tank treatments and as a dip. Works great in emergencies. Highly recommend but only if its needed. I don't really recommend using it if nothing is wrong

Has anyone had any one had a bad experience using this with plating sponge? The reason I ask is because I lost some plating sponge when I treated my tank with chemiclean. It did not bother anything else, not even any other sponges, just the plating sponge.

So which dosage and duration did you guys used?
I see two different dosages in the ReefBuilder article: 500 mg/500 gallon every other days for 10 days and 500 mg/100 gallon, which I suspect for the same frequency and duration as the 500/500 dosage.

I see two selections for Cipro on Chewy. One is Aqua-cipro ($49 for 30 tablets), and the other one is a generic ciprofloxacin 500 mg tablets ($8.70 for 30 tablets) for cats, dogs, and small pets.
Is Aqua-cipro really better, or would the generic ciprofloxacin be okay? I suppose Cipro is Cipro.

Used to be. Chewy sold it. But think new laws got passed that’s no longer the case. Not sure when it kicks on though.
