Do you uave an idea of what you want your tank to look like at the end? If not I highly recomend a vission. You will stray slightly but it will kepp uou focused. Then list what you want and compatability and growth rates not just of fish and inverts but corals. Then you can figure equipment needed for how you want to maintain. Lights can be biggest expense

So, I've merged two 40g aio tanks into one. I gave away a lot of local (Florida Keys) green zoas and encrusting gorgonians and then cleaned and re-set the tank. I'm about 90% done getting the corals, anemones and other local livestock moved over. BTW, my 4" long mantis shrimp and my coral banded shrimp seem to be willing to share space in the tank... at least for the short term!

I have a few more anemones to move into the sand and then I'll buy some more colorful RFAs to fill out the sandy beach around the rockscape.
