Yeah the holes on the ones i posted only go up about 3" or so, so any media you put in there is gonna be higher than that. And they dont look like fork holders at the cafeteria..lol

I have and tried the acrylic filter cup that Octo Lids make with just the holes on the bottom for my other tank and I ended up shelving it. It clogged way to easy. I think that the Red Sea cups are much better with a higher flow capability IME.

been considering the fiter baskets but have NO issues with socks. Sounds like a lot of trouble for some as I simply wash it warm to hot cycle in machine (No bleach, soap, etc) and med spin, then air dry.

I been looking at these also for my sump. I think I prefer the ones from saltwateraquarium.com that only have holes on the bottom, not the sides. I want the water to fully go through the floss before exiting. Makes me wish I had a 3D printer, lol.

This looks nice too. With so many choices, its hard to decide which one works best!

Well, with this info from your experience, you make a good point!

My new sump has the rectangle socks. I think they are a little easier to turn inside out, spray them down in the sink, put in 5 gallon of bleach water mix till I get a few, through them in the wash cold water only and run it twice, the have a place to hang them up to dry and store them till next use. I just made a routine of it so not too bad for me but I still don't like changing them. I like those cups but wondered if they would be any better. My thinking was if they were better the sump would have came with them instead of the socks.

I use a Red Sea cup, i run just standard filter floss in it but i have a hand full of glass marbles in the bottom of the cup to prevent clogging and hold the floss higher.

Was running socks about 6 months (yes, I think they are a pain to clean as well) and my fuge started working so well I couldn't keep nitrates in the tank. Pulled the socks and started running nothing there and was able to keep nitrates at 5ppm. I was planning to go with these cups and nothing in the bottom just to catch any snails or large items that fall to the sump.

Yeah I can see running socks every once in a while to polish the water but no need in my tank.

Looks like you found a good balance for feeding and coral/fish population! I was overfeeding and my nitrate was running 50! I have been doing crazy water changes, daily in the beginning, now maybe every 2-3 days. I thought maybe by getting the cups it would cut down on the maintence of cleaning the socks and I can easily change the filter material. I am also on the fence about using the Zeovit system..I already purchased an Avast reactor and have the rocks and bottles. My nitrates last night were 25...I am stumped! I am almost starving my fish! I think I will start a new thread to get some ideas..
