It’s not a bad crab, it’s just a crab that likes to eat coral, and probably snails and shrimp and even small fish. The black tips on the claws is how you tell it is a bad crab. It is a very bad crab.
I agree definitely on that being a gorilla crab no buenoThe black tips on the claws is how you tell it is a bad crab. It is a very bad crab.
Well spoken KrisReef. It’s not a bad crab, it’s just a crab that likes to eat coral, and probably snails and shrimp and even small fish.
We used to let them live in our triggerfish tank and that was probably not good for the crabs.
My brother convinced me to setup a pico for himI don't know the species name, but it looks, from the shape and pointed claws, like an crab for the sump. I would sentence him/her to life to the sump without parole.
You will probably find a few more. Pico tank is a nice alternative. My brother convinced me to setup a pico for him
yeah got it all setup with sand a rock and a small in tank filterYou will probably find a few more. Pico tank is a nice alternative.
Sorry, been super busy lately - for a species ID, straight-on photos of both the whole dorsal side (the top/back) of the crab including its legs and straight-on pics of the claws/face of the crab under moderately bright, white light are the most helpful.I have no idea but maybe @ISpeakForTheSeas will. Some crabs are okay, but quite a few are NOT.

OP, the third pic you shared is a usable angle for the dorsal pic, but it needs brighter lighting.
As has been mentioned, though, this crab is almost certainly not reef-safe; I'm glad to hear you're setting up a tank for it!

Yeah, gorilla crab is a bit if a catch-all term in the hobby for not reef-safe, typically hairy crabs (technically, the term applies to Xanthid crabs and arguably Pilumnid crabs, but that's sort of irrelevant) - I was meaning if you want to try for a species-specific ID. It's not necessary, as most crabs have pretty similar/easy care requirements, but if you're curious, I'm happy to try and help.im 99% sure its a gorilla crab he matched online pictures and descriptions

Also, as a side note, the ventral side (the stomach/bottom of the crab) can tell you if the crab is male or female.
