Unless you live under a rock like my grumpy goby, you know that there are some pretty big differences between live and dry rock. Many of us can agree that there can be pros and cons to both, but everyone's loyalty lies somewhere. Where does yours lie? Live rock or dry rock?

Are you using live rock or dry rock in your tank?

She does realize that adding googly eyes to a rock doesn't make it “live”, right.jpg

I feel pretty confident Ill always have a strong bias towards live rock, either natural from the ocean or maricultured in the ocean.

I voted other. My first tank was started with live ocean rock. My last two tanks were started with dry rock in the display and live rock in the sump. This is the sump of my newest tank started in March. So far I've not had any nuisance algae in the display using this method.

i started with "seeded" dry rock. overtime swapped smaller pieces from other tanks, and added biomedia from TSA and sand from aquabiomics.

Started cycling with about 11lbs of caribsea 'liferock' and eventually added 3lbs of LR rubble acquired from established tanks. The rubble had sponges, aiptasia, ball anemones, pods, little bits of coralline and hair algae. I was happy to get all of that, even the aiptasia which quickly grew from pin size to a quarter size :)

What is that orange stuff growing on the rock in the bottom right corner? I recently got some live rock and I have some of it as well.

Some type of sponge. I run it as a cryptic fuge so it's not lit. There is some cool stuff growing in there.

Both. Some of my live rock I've had wet since 2000. The most recent live rock piece was from 2004, Fiji, handpicked at a Connecticut store that is no longer in business. It still has a couple of tube worms living in the rock.

My tank is roughly 8 months old. I started with both. Dry display and live in sump. While acquiring everything else: lights, skimmer, controller. I still let the tank do its thing for about 2-3 months. Why rush? I have some sps frags that are doing great and some growth and maybe one or 2 not doing so great but on a path to recovery.
