So I was hoping to paint the back of my tank black using a roller with some rust oleum black gloss, would it still work even though the tank is sitting vertically rather then being flipped on its side?

I vote yes go for it and just do several thinner coats so you don’t get drips. What I’ve found when painting tanks is that vertical vs horizontal isn’t as much of a challenge as getting that first coat to stick enough so the roller rolls instead of just dragging.

How big is the tank? On smaller tanks a simple and quick fix is a sheet of black plastic. Just stick it behind the tank.

The tank is 4 feet by two feet by 2 feet
