hello reefers!!

My electricity bill has been a lot higher lately. I live in California with 30 cent per kWh!

I added an energy monitor the other day and it cost me $1.5 per day to run my tank! I imagine it would be $2 per day in the winter. It’s only a 90G tank with 3 XR15s and no skimmer.

My electric bill used to be $100-$150 before my tank and now it’s $220-$350 with only 2 adults and 1 toddler in a newly built home.

What’s your guys electricity bill with the tank??
Leave California?

$170 a month, in winter, $220 in summer.
Single bedroom apartment in North Nj. 2 tanks, reefer 170 and a hospital tank.

Temp is set to 71, but they turn my heat on late November, so i have to use an electric heater. They shut the heat off april 1st give or take, so ive been running the heaters since to keep it warm at night.

Apex says my tank costs me $28 a month.

keep the pool at 85°
Dang thats almost spa temp. I won't even get in our pool when it gets over 80. I'll sit in the ac instead.

Our bill is right around $300 a month give or take a few $. I'm hoping it may drop a little now that I've taken a tank down that was running a feeflo external AC pump.

This is what our average has been for electricity. We are installing a geo thermal heat pump this month so that should start to come down. June of 2021 is when my tank was started.

My wife and I did a test and unplugged everything when it wasn't in use except the internet and it dropped our bill $75 a month.

I get notices that I use more than my neighbors. They probably just think I'm growing pot.

They send those to everyone. It was the only thing that convinced people to try to conserve electricity:

Here, they have a mandate to decrease usage by 0.5% annually or something like that and also to switch to 100% "green" energy by 2030-something. They can't just jack up rates to reduce consumption because rates are controlled by a public commission. So they resort to psy-ops...

My total electric bill is about $350-$550 a month, depending on the season. My tanks are about $200 a month by themselves. I work for an electric company but don’t get a discount. Reef tanks are definitely not budget friendly. I live in Michigan.

$125 a month. 300g dt with 125g sump. 36g fresh water, 1 adult, 3 cats.
Right across the Missouri River from downtown Omaha Nebraska on the Iowa side.
My electric is not the issue. I used so much water the first 6 months, the water company sent a guy out to inspect my house to make sure I didn't have a broken water line on the house side of the meter. he saw my tank and said, "no wonder you use so much water".

Upcoming main is 8ft by 4ft plus yet to be determined height. Support systems include a grow out frag tank, QT for fish and inverts along with observation. Last I'm going to do is figure out my electric bill. As it is. My finance mind can't wrap it's head around the fact I'll be spending an exuberant amount of money that could be earning in the market. If I get past that and finally pull the trigger. My electric bill will likely be peanuts by comparison.

Having said that. Looking at ways to be prudent not only on that build and support system but in what it takes to run and maintain it although I still expect it will all be greater than a reasonable person would expect. :rolling-on-the-floor-laughing:

My tank uses between $100 to $150 worth of electricity per month. It's a 300 gallon system with a basement sump. I have 2 iwaki pumps pushing water upstairs

I’m in CA in the Bay Area. This past month the bill was $209. I have a 5’ dart frog tank running two 150W Leds and a 45 Gallon reef tank full setup. 3 adults 3 kids in home. Lots of electronics and we run a window a/c a few hours a day. Back when I had my 100 gallon tank, the bill would be $290-310 so getting rid of that tank definitely cut the bill substantially
Nothing to do with fish tanks but just as a point of reference, when I lived in Santa Cruz in the late 1980’s my highest power bill ever was $55 the one year we had to run the heat for a week. Average was $35.

Between my 4 nano tanks, I'm probably ball park $40 a month which is nothing.

My electric bill averages about $500 a month.

Most of my energy costs are coming from my network rack with several servers. I use about 600kWh a month on that alone. On average I'm between 1700-2000kWh a month.
