Hi :)
I'm trying to semi-DIY a saltwater tank. I'm trying to convert an Aquael OPTISET 240 (60g) to a saltwater tank with an overflow and a bottom sump. already built a 25g sump and now im trying to figure out the best way to acheive an overflow.
thing is:
1. I'm afraid to drill the tank as it is new and I'll probably cry for weeks if it will crack
2. HOB overflows are an option although they seem to be highly infamous here (and i also dont like the design of them and the flooding possiblity)

I've noticed recently on some built-in gaps in my tank and wanted to share you guys and maybe get some insipirations.
those gaps are located at the top of the rear panel, 2 of them (one on each side) and are meant to be used for canister filteration and wiring hiding space.
Here is an image of one with dimensions:

I was thinking of like designing something like this:

sort of a grill (on both sides as i dont see how i control the water level just on one side), that will be attached to a pipe (again, 2 pipes) and down to the sump. My state of mind is that setting the water level to be at the middle of the grills will be enough for sufficent filteration rate and will not overflow the main tank.

Thoughts? any better idea? help with how to build something like the above using PVC or any other material?
THANKS A LOT!

You would want to test how the water flows through the 'weir' down below depending on how you design it. Thats a deep 'hole' and will become your water level. (since I don't know how deep that looks on the front can't say good or bad - but just something to think about).

Back to the hole itself - it could be fairly noisy, and - I would use narrower gates to keep fish, snails, etc out of danger.

Lastly - I don't think there is any prejudice about HOB overflows (which is what I would use here). Best of luck no matter what you decide!
