Im in the planning stages for my own sump design as well! Don’t have a proper build thread yet but take a look at this thread I’m working at for my planning phase, I’d love your feedback AND I think it might be worth taking a look for you too.

Basically, I’m beginning to be of the impression that having a spillover passageway between the overflow and the mechanical filtration can be easier, especially in the context of a lot of mechanical filtration or a filter roller, as opposed to direct flow to Mechanical filtration. My diagrams should clarify what Im getting at. Anyways, if you’re looking at using a roller in the future, might be worth planning ahead this way?

Dude could just be lucky. The drop into the return chamber is what creates the issue. The bubbles created by the drop get sucked into the return pump and end up micro bubbles in the tank. If you have an ATO so that the drop stays constant and it's not a big drop it might be just fine without one.
If putting your own baffles in, why not Ave the last baffle before return chamber be sloped? A 5% slope should probably do, letting the water slide down instead of crashing down. Or 10 percent if you want to be sure.
