I use reef crystals. And they weren't very high, but I'm covering my tank for 3 days to kill it and then I'll see where they're at. I have an emerald crab in there and a few hermits that dispite there being algae everywhere still killed a snail. The only filtration I have is the live rock and a skimmer... will adding chaeto make a big difference?

Adding Cheato will help, if you have enough of it. Then watch it grow like mad. Sounds like you don't have enough snails though.

All depends on which types your getting.
10-20 Turbos
10-20 Bumble Bees or something of that type
10-20 Nass Snails
10-20 Astraea Snails

Kents Phosphate Sponge. Use as directed and all will be fine. Worked wonders for my and within the first 8hrs I saw the GHA turn from green to white at the top and by the next morning was all white. I swapped it out after the first 24hrs, did a 15g WC on my 40g system then ran a new batch of Kents. Within 3 days the tank was SUPER clean and I've never seen the water look so good.

In regards to the number of snails, in my 40g reef I have 8 turbo snails and I believe 5 astreas. I favor the turbo snails because they are very efficient and are algae eating beasts. And even better yet, most of the LFS's around me sell them for a cheap price of $2.50.

It never hurts to make a run and buy a few more if you haven't yet done so.
