I would toss it or QT it if it's got you worried.

I pulled something like that out of my tank yesterday. It was a worm of some kind and had some tiny hairs with a pink head.
I've seen a few bristle worms like you're mentioning but the 1 I pulled doesn't appear to have any hairs.

It's still in the bag from LFS, I didn't even want to put it in quarantine (there's stuff in there right now) in case it was dangerous.

Are you talking about the fuzzy round whitish thing? Is that a limpet?

I am talking about the white thing. It's not a limpet. It seems pretty affixed to the rock.

It might be a sponge. It's hard to tell.

I think it's soft. I'm not really feeling like touching it at this point in time.

What happened was: I went to the LFS and expressed how cool I thought these mushrooms were, but I couldn't afford the whole rock they were on. So the guy says "hang on a sec" and comes back with a chisel. I got a nice chunk, and that white thing was once inside the rock (I think).

It looks like an animal that tries to look like a mushroom.

Like what?

I'm just not sure a sponge could have live inside a hole in a rock for a long period of time.

Very likely a sponge then. Most hate strong light so grow in holes in the rocks. Won't hurt anything

Unidentified Growth -sponge 11/21/08 Hi Crew! I'm attaching a picture of a white sack that is growing on the side of my live rock. <That, my friend, is what we fish-folk call a sponge.> I don't know what it is but it seems to be getting bigger. <Cool... sponges are fun, attractive, and beneficial.> It may be hard to see on the picture, but there is a little hole with a spout near the top of the sack. Is this a nest? Should I be concerned? I thank you for your time and expertise. As always, you guys are the best! <Thanks... please see here: http://www.wetwebmedia.com/sponges.htm http://www.wetwebmedia.com/spongeidfaqs.htm -OneCoolFish <Enjoy your sponge! Sara M.>

Ok well now it's not in a hole, if it's a sponge, what do I do?

I poked it, with a long straw (I use it for target feeding). It seemed like it may be hard.

Spirastrella (Sphenciospongia) vagabunda Ridley 1884, the Vagabond Boring Sponge. Bores its way into carbonate places (rock, corals...) by acidic secretion. An important group of organisms for "recycling" limestone. Hawai'i photos.

Sponges are not as soft and squishy as you would expect them to be when alive. As long as it is in a shaded spot that gets good flow they will grow.
