I posted this in another thread on crab ID:

In general, it is not easy to ID a crab, other than the species that are commensal to coral, or very few specific crabs. Other than these, most of the crabs are not reef safe. There are herbivore crabs that are good reef cleaner and reef safe. I use this rule:
If a crab has pointy pinchers, it cannot live in my tank. If the pinchers are spoon tipped, they can stay.
