FREE mantis shrimp that came out of live rock from the gulf. He’s a pretty active shrimp. I would love to keep him but my wife vetoed the extra tank.

Local pick up in Ringoes NJ 08551

Sorry to hear you can't keep him. I ended up with one from my TBS shipment. I heard the clicking. Took me a few days to catch sight of him. Smasher, not a spearer. He quickly became trained to eat out of my turkey baster when I'm feeding the corals and will come all the way out in the open to do it.

I thought it was my pistol shrimp the first time I heard the clicks but eventually he came out to eat and I saw those big eyes. It was really cool watching him roam around. Maybe one day I’ll get one on purpose

Yeah, they’re pretty common hitchhikers in live rock shipments. I had one come in when I got 20lbs to supplement what I had when upgrading tanks and decided to leave him/her in. So far has been there for close to a year . No issues except a few extra dead snails here and there. Eats the same frozen everything else does.

If you're going to keep a "Smasher" you should be using a tank with at least 1/2" walls. I recollect reading about one being kept in a 10G tank. Some visiting kit decided to tap on the tank, and the annoyed Mantis tapped back! Woosh... it became time to retrieve the shrimp from the floor and rehome it quickly.
