Been awhile since I posted an update. I'm battling diatoms at the moment on my sand bed. Going to load up the reactor with GFO.

Skimmer is showing signs of the battle.

Whatever you do, don't do like me and drop the cup on the floor on the way outside! :( Ha! Glad you are feeling well enough to spend some time on the tank. Keep getting better!

Before you pack in the gfo, check your nutrients. On the plus side, 24 hours of gfo will remove 21ppm of silicates.

Yep, all levels are where they should be. N03 and P04 are where I like them.

I should have mentioned that I added some sand to my sand bed recently. Dry aragonite. Rinsed well, but some silicates may have come in with it do to rising with tap.

Nothing I haven't dealt with before.

I am sooooo happy to see that fighting spirit back Don. :)

It is amazing how when a tank is left alone, how well it does;)

Update: diatoms are still around, but not as bad. Haven't done a water change in two weeks thinking some small amount of silicates is slipping past the RO/DI.

DI resin is depleting rather fast lately and my pre filter cartridge is turning "rusty" brown as is my first carbon block.

I guess it's time to get a silicate test kit.

Don,
We have new construction going on close by.
All the sudden I was burning thru DI resin really fast.
Used to used the regular sediment filter, but gave this one a shot and my DI resin has been last lasting longer.

Don't know if it will do the job for you, but it may be worth a shot.
I'm using the 1 micron in the above link.
