have had ich twice, or velvet which resulted in a lot of dead fish. After going through twice of 80 days without any fish, all new fish in quarantine. Now I have 7 fish that apparently live a healthy life without disease. tomorrow I will pick up a Halichoeres Chrysus. dealer promises as usual that this has gone through the qt system like everything else, and been medicated with copper and various other things. Should I qt this or not, how do I do it? wrasse tolerate copper poorly? and surely they must have sand too? the two previous fish I tried to qt died suddenly, looked healthy so I fear I did something wrong.

A QT tank is very stressful to a fish.

IMO 10 gallon is too small for qt tank in most cases, especially if having multiple fish. Do I understand correctly you only have 3 gallons of water in the 10 gallon tub?

There is no filter listed or powerhead for water movement. I don't see that any media is moved from the display tank to the qt tank, is the qt tank cycled?

Assume fish has something and treat short term at least 14-21 days to assure you are introducing nothing foreign into the tank. Risk is the concern here and utilize a 20 long tank

I QT all my fish. Even the ones that come in already QT’d.

I have a 29 gal QT tank with a heater, power filter and small power head. I bought the tank from Petco for $1 a gal during one of their sales. 10 gallons isn’t much water volume. I’d consider upgrading.

Best to observe medication free for at least a week. Get the new fish eating and settled before you medicate. If you medicate at all.

Ammonia can be a big killer of fish in QT. If you have a power filter with some bio media, it’s easy to keep it cycled. Other than that, keep your pollution down through water changes and ramp up any meds slowly.

This is a bit late to help you. But if you have room keep a fully cycled tank set up just for this. You could also consider the tank transfer method. Just moving the fish from bucket to bucket will avoid worrying about ammonia. But you would need lots of spare equipment on hand. Lack of water movement and ammonia kills more fish in quarantine than anything else in my opinion. Whatever method you decide I wish you luck.

Thank you for saying this. I think many people skip this step and throw the fish right into a sterile tank with white pvc and treat with copper immediately. I wonder how many fish just die from stress? Sure are lot of deaths in QT reported.
This is my observation QT

Yee, I see where i might whent wrong. More water equal more stability. Do i need a powerhead? Or is a airstone enought?

I see you're using a plastic tub. You should never quarantine fish in a tank that doesn't allow for clear lateral viewing of the fish. Without the ability to see the fish you're flying blind - you can't tell how well they are eating, how fast they are breathing, etc.
