Hi yall,

I want to turn this tank into a seahorse tank. I already have other rock with more branch like structure that I want to put in. But I have questions about the corals I have. Do I have to remove them because their aren't considerd safe for seahorses?

I do know that the montipora plates have to go for sure but I don't know about all the leather corals. I also will remove the wavemaker when I finaly get a pair.

The leathers are fine. No need to remove the wave makers as the seahorses will need a decent flow. If you can add a Gorgonian or two, that would be even better!

So the leather corals will not release any toxic if a seahorse will put its tail around it? It was definitely the plan to put in some Gorgonians!

You have to watch out for the corals with a potent sting, any toxin from the leather isn’t going to hurt the seahorses. You will need to do more water changes anyway, so that will remove a lot of stuff.

My seahorses cling to my sinularia. But I run activated carbon anyway so that takes care of the toxins.

So what you say it's not necessary to remove the leather corals? Do you think the seahorses will wrap their tails around it or is it better to change the leathers for some Gorgonians? I try to give them the best home I can provide!

Seahorses and leather corals are fine together. Think of it this way, fish live with leather corals and suffer no ill effects. The toxins that leathers produce is to keep other corals away from them, not to harm fish. Seahorses are fish and they will hitch (wrap) their tails around anything. This is why you want to not keep corals that have a potent sting. You will want a good flow in the tank so you want pumps. You do need to cover the pump with some type of mesh because the seahorses will hitch them and injure themselves if they get caught in the prop. Gorgonians and macro algae are great with them too!
