I'm, ok with high since all I'm looking for is above 1200. My tank is typically in the 1600 range anyways, and I never add mag. lol

Sounds like you are best off not testing at all. lol

Cheaper, easier, and you almost certainly will not get below 1200 ppm regardless of what you do. :)

Hopefully they release a calibration kit for it like they have for all the other checkers

Hanna? You mean the colored water samples they provide in sealed vials? Not a fan.

IMO, these colored water solutions are misleading folks into think their results are accurate if they pass this machine function test, which is all these solutions do do.

They need to provide true standards that actually check the reagents and procedures.

Yeah I typically test like once a month, and always above 1300. I will probably pass on this, as salifert is good enough for my ballpark figure.

Yup, regular purple box IO, has been really high in mag the last couple boxes. My weekly WC's regime keeps it up to acceptable levels.

I got one of these testers and it gave me high reading 400+. So I went out and bought a new salifert and Red Sea test kit just to be sure, both test are about same 1400-1440 on multiple test and the Hanna is reading 1800+ This thing sucks Waste of my money so far

I also brought one today, I can't get it to read anywhere near right. I haven't got any ref solution to test it against but compared to my recent (Monday of this week) ICP results it's reading >400ppm to high. I have tested 3 times now, two of the tests were >1700ppm and one was >1500ppm. My ICP results from a sample taken on Monday were 1286ppm. I note that the instructions state both the reagents and sample water need to be between 18-28 degrees c. Tank water is 25.5 so that's OK, I do not have a spare temp probe to check the reagents, however as they've been indoors for several hours they should have certainly been within the acceptable range.
You’re not the only one.

let’s all report this issue to Hanna. Don’t hold back. I believe the more contacts we make in hope they will fix the problem.

I having the same problem, checker reads 1760, Salifert 1480 ppm, tested 3 times and got the same results.

I also requested if they can provide extra reagents when the replacements being shipped back since I used around 15 tests since it was so inconsistent. Will keep this community posted.

Do me a favor and redo a test. When Reagent A draws air, you get less of Reagent A in the test pushing the numbers high. Try running a test using the tip but using 5 ml of Reagent A. This will allow for error when drawing up Reagent A. Please let me know how this works for you. I think they created the instructions of 4 ml of A based on lab grade equipment, not regular guys doing the test at home, with plastic tips that suck in air and with all the errors we create. Try 5 ml of Reagent A and let me know how it goes for you.

Same issues with mine purchased from Saltwateraquarium. Com. Contacted Hanna and the asked me to send it to them to test.

You need to contact and send it back to Hanna as well. I sent it back last week still hasn’t heard from them.

This one seems to be pretty precise. Red sea said 1600, hanna said 1630. Only odd number here is the trident saying 1480.

If 2 tests says they are close to each other, and one is wildly different, which one would you believe? From what I'm seeing, is they are pretty accurate.

Been on the fence about picking one up, as mag is something I only test like once a month. Might still as I simply hate titration tests.
I just sent in an icp test and my trident is spot on. So to answer your question about two different tests being wrong, yes definitely two different test kits can be wrong

Hello from Hanna Instruments,

I am on the aquarium team, here to address the Magnesium Checker issue.

I am posting this same message on various threads regarding the Magnesium Checker so that as many people as possible get the information.

First, here is an FAQ with answers:

1) What happened?
As many of you know, Hanna Instruments prides itself in accuracy. We do extensive R&D before releasing products – what happened with the Magnesium Checker was a unique combination of unexpected factors. Our manufacturing facility is in Romania, and shipments from Eastern Europe were delayed in the Spring due to events in that area. With this, the initial batch of Magnesium products were in cargo storage for longer than anticipated. While the cargo containers sat for extended periods in the Spring, the temperature in the containers increased. This resulted in longer than usual exposure to higher than usual temperatures, which in turn caused one of the reagents to expire early. The products passed R&D inspection on site, and we’ve never had them degrade in transit before, which is why we were surprised about the issue at first. And why we are grateful that users like yourselves reported it!

2) What did Hanna do to fix the products?
The issue was one reagent expiring early during extended high-temperature exposure in the cargo containers. To fix this, we were able to greatly improve the temperature stability of this reagent by reformulating it from a liquid to a powder. This means that Reagent B is now a powder for this product. Our other Checkers have a timer built in for the dissolution of the powder reagent, so we added that to the new Magnesium Checkers too. That is the only difference in devices, but because of that, we are sending everyone who purchased the initial version a new Checker with the timer built in!

3) Why has it taken so long?
Resolving this issue took several steps. First we had to reformulate Reagent B into a powder. Then we had to add the timer into the production process for the Checkers. Once those updates were made, we had to repackage all the previously produced items with the updated ones. And of course, we had to figure out the logistics of replacing these items both for customers such as yourselves, and bulk purchasers like LFSs and major websites. We also found new transport options to avoid extended international shipping delays in the future.

4) How is Hanna going to make this right for the people who already purchased?
We will send everyone who fills out this form: HI783 Marine Checker Reagent Issue Form free replacements for whatever Magnesium items (Checker and/or Extra Reagent Packages) were purchased. Please fill out all fields!

5) How do I know if I am in queue for the replacements after submitting the above form?
I receive all the form submissions. My apologies that there is not a confirmation, but once you hit submit I do receive it. We are on track to have all current form submissions fulfilled by the end of October, and new submissions as soon as possible thereafter.
