Hi,

I have the update hanna magnesium checker (the one with one part liquid and second part powder);

I've tried everything to get an accurate reading but it always reads 100-200ppm higher.

Anyone had success with it?

It’s a finicky beast for sure. I don’t totally trust it or any hobbies test kit for that matter. So as long as it’s close and within the +|- allowed , I wouldn’t worry too much.

My mag and calc Hanna checkers read about 100points lower than my Red Sea kits….. it’s been somewhat perplexing trying to figure out which ones to trust

Mine is also consistently reading high compared to ICP. The green line is ATI ICP constant at 1285ppm and the red line is the Hanna checker. Measuring around 180 ppm higher than ATI. Not good.

Pro tip after month of testing for people reading this;

For mg and ca get a Salifert. For alk, no3, po4 go for hanna. No more headache

Typical accuracy in my testing of hobby grade Mg test kits is +/- 200ppm.
That includes Salifert and Hanna.

But it really does not matter if you aim for around 1250-1300 as nothing in the tank cares.

Salifert is much more closer to a trident then Hanna which was reading 100-150ppm higher. If I am paying 80€ for a checker I expected a decent read at least. Salifert costs 10€. And I am an hanna fan.

I agree. Over the years I've collected all the Hanna Checkers.
The only one I still use is the ULR Phosphate.

All the other tests I use are now Salifert.

I’ve compared my Hanna to the trident, salifert, and Red Sea kits and I am within 20-30ppm. I don’t like the syringes they include with the kids so I got myself a couple of graduated pipettes and my accuracy improved significantly. Just my two cents.

Yes I have 3 adjustable pipettes, 0-1ml, 0-5ml and 0-10ml. Those 10ml cylinders the Hanna comes with are not great.

The Hanna magnesium checker is consistent when using the pipette but the reading is wrong. In this case id follow the advice of considering trends to see if values go up or down over time but I would not make an adjustment based off the checker value.

The last jump on my chart was an adjustment I made based on ATI ICP trying to increase to 1350. Hanna says it overshot, I'm not concerned, I'll wait for the next ICP to confirm.

FYI, The Hanna sample amount is not critical.

We ran tests with 9, 10 and 11ml sample sizes and there was no measurable variation in test result for the HR Nitrate and ULR phosphate checkers.

The amount of powder reagent is also not critical with +/- 10% reagent not affecting results.

Magnesium and Calcium are much more finicky and sample size, how the sample is mixed etc actually make a difference. I agree that nitrate, alkalinity, ph, phosphate are very robust.

That is very interesting. I never thought about testing with more or less sample water. Guess I got another nerdy experiment to do :)
