My wife and I have had reef tanks for a number of years, but they've all been nano tanks save for one. In the past, we had a 40br mixed reef, 30g frag tank, Fluval Edge 6g macroalgae reef, a 70g reef that met an untimely end (power company shut off the power prematurely prior to a move...), and our current tank, an IM 25 Lagoon.

The Lagoon has been fun, but it's been weird dealing with our first long term AIO, and I've just missed having a larger reef. I spotted this ad on a local reefer forum for a Cadlights 100g, stand, sump, and return pump for $200. Having literally nowhere to put this thing, no plan whatsoever, and getting the green light from Nicole, I pulled the trigger on this setup:

It took me, the seller, and two of his friends to lug this thing up two flights of stairs at his apartment complex to put the tank in my minivan. That's when I found out that the stand would have to be a separate trip, and it would totally be ok sitting outside right? Well kind of...it started raining when my wife and I unloaded the tank and sat it down in our family room, so I sped off to get the stand, and Nic cleaned up the glass while it sat on our rug.

2020-01-16.jpg

I get back to the apartment complex to throw a very wet stand into the car, drying it off as best I can, get home, and unload it to an area Nic has cleared for the new tank. It's going to go in our dining nook with prime viewing from the family room, so we'll get to see it constantly. In that spot, it's sat for four months while we ordered incorrect plumbing from BRS, I've traveled for work, and we've been lazy about moving forward.

After a few weeks WFH, we desperately needed a home project, and threw ourselves headfirst into setting up the new tank, so that we can enjoy it and migrate over the livestock over from the lagoon. We figured out that the incorrect plumbing, if reworked a bit, would be able to be completed. When you turn an old bulkhead into a pvc couple using a hacksaw, dremel, and sandpaper, you know you're COVID-19 reefing.

From there we lined up the foam pad properly while lifting the tank straight up, and placed it gently back down into its final resting place. We started making RODI from our system by the bucket, and slowly began filling the tank, and added the eggcrate and dry rock we got with the tank.

Eventually we filled the tank with RODI, added black vinyl to the wall with the window, rinsed and added dry sand, and mixed in the salt with the help of a new Gyre 350.

Right now I'm waiting on a new propeller assembly, filter, and suction cup feet from Sicce for the Synca Silent 4.0 that came with the tank. We've also ordered a new pump from BRS if that doesn't work, so something will end up getting returned, and our tank will at least be turning over fully. I'm still looking for a few used Hydra 26HD's in white to match the existing unit over the Lagoon, so if anyone is holding, I'll gladly take them off your hands.

That is a great tank to start a new build with. I really like the clean look of a rimless tank. :)

Thank you! I adore rimless tanks, and I'm thrilled to have something that will finally work as a more stable sps focused mixed reef! We've done alright in the 25, but compared to our old 40br, it's waaaay more sensitive due to the lack of water volume. My job takes me from home two weeks at a time for motorcycle rallies throughout the summer, so I think the added stability while I'm away will relieve some stress.

Thank you! Pics will be coming in over the next few weeks as we rebuild the pump since the old propeller was destroyed...like cracked open with rust destroyed. I'll be thrilled to have water churning over into the sump come next weekend!

Here's the current running setup. It's done great with sps color and growth, though we've been having to dose Vibrant to combat a bubble algae issue. It's on the way out thankfully, and should be clear by the time we move the rock over to the new tank.

Once this is off the counter, I'll move my espresso machine over and have a little coffee station instead of it being shoved in the pantry lol

- My backup Sicce 4.0 came from BRS yesterday in case the new prop assembly coming Friday doesn't fix the pump that came with the tank.

- An Essence 130 Skimmer I bought from a forum member comes tomorrow as well.

-Tank is full and set to the proper salinity including some water from the 25 lagoon's water change, and I've got 10 gallons of RO prepped in case I need to add more water to the system after transferring the rocks

We're almost there and I'm really excited to get water circulating through the whole system! It's going to be very open and minimal in the display to allow for a ton of sps growth and open swimming space. We've accounted for the minimal scape by adding more sand than we normally would, and are utilizing large bio blocks in the sump.

The Maxspect Gyre 350 stopped working this morning, and a little flashing wrench symbol popped up any time I tried to restart it. Watched a video online about disassembly and cleaning, followed the instructions, and now everything is working perfectly again. I guess mixing salt and pouring sand into the tank was too much particulate for my new powerhead...

Parts for the Sicce came in during my WFH lunch break, so Nicole and I got to work installing the pump and adding water to the tank.

Big Question Time!

The water level is a bit high for my liking, particularly here in earthquake country. The overflow uses the vertical slits on three sides, and I'm wondering if it would be better to remove teeth, or try to Dremel the teeth further down the overflow. Would love to lower the water line height by at least 1/2"-1".

Also, is there any way to quiet down a Durso overflow?

Decided the return pump we got with the tank was too big at almost 1000gph, so ordered one around 500gph to slow down the water though the sump and lower my DT water level.

Today we're moving everything from the Lagoon 25 over to the new 100g tank!

I installed the light temporarily for now using the stainless under-cabinet mount I welded up and some shelf brackets. I'll do a final install when the aluminum wall brackets to mount the unistrut shows up in a few weeks. That will accommodate another 1-2 white Hydra 26 HD's I'm still waiting to pop up in the marketplace.

Live rock has been scrubbed, rinsed, and moved into the larger tank!

SPS has been acclimated and is now in the frag rack, LPS is acclimating now, then I have to try to catch a gramma to move him over as the last inhabitant of the Lagoon 25!

Nicole will figure out the scape on the left archway a bit later this evening...looks cool, but unnatural as it currently sits.

The scape is ironed out and we've added the first of our planned utalitarian fish, a yellow tang and a melanarus wrasse.

I'm loving the minimal aquascape as it will leave for tons of swimming room for the Anthias we want to get, and give the sps somewhere to grow.

A new return pump is coming from BRS on Friday, so that should help to drop the water line a bit and give the skimmer more time to do it's job.

Thats a great looking scape. Just imagine when its all filled in with Birdnest/Acros! Bet the Yellow tang is loving all the swimming room.

If you can can we see some better close up shots of the Wrasse? I know they can be difficult to photograph

Sure thing, he's a good eater so he's out and about for most of the day.

Bonus pic of the sump we got organized last weekend with DJ Switches, Tunze Osmolator, ATO Container, and a water level decal by forum member @Megan Smith wire management needs some love...

New return pump came in and dropped the DT water height by about 1/4" - 3/16" just like we were hoping! As an added bonus the overflow is now completely silent, and the turnover through the sump is much slower, which should allow the skimmer and fuge to work more optimally.

We added a Kole Tang and some more sps frags yesterday, and switched the Hydra from the David Saxby setting to the BRS setting in their Hydra 26 HD video. New setting looks really good and we've added the light acclimation feature for the next few weeks.

Also, our Pixel's Night Sight camera mode is killer for tank shots!

Long-winded update incoming....

Everything was doing great until we added the Kole Tang, as he infected the tank with Velvet. We scrambled to get a QT going, but it was too late, and we lost every fish save for our Aptaisia Eating Filefish. We were devastated to say the least.

We kept him in a Fiji 10 while treating him, and decided we wanted to get a larger QT to add more fish, so we added a NanoCube 28 to the bedroom. In that QT we now have the Filefish, a pair of clowns, a small Yellow Tang, and a small Tomini Tang. We are being proactive with copper treatment based on articles found on this site, everyone is eating well and healthy, and ammonia is still at 0.

The fallow period ends on Aug 1st... We've been reefing for around a decade and it's the first time dealing with this sort of thing, so lesson learned as we will now be QT'ing all of our fish for at least a month.

Since the tank is empty, we've been continuing to feed it to maintain biological filtration, and are still doing water changes as we have corals.

We ended up finishing the custom unistrut mount for the LED's and ordered a rental Par Meter from BRS, only to find out that that we couldn't get the lights to match quite right. We ended up rushing to a local LFS and picked up a new pair of Hydra 32HD's, looked at a bunch of settings people are having success with, and loved the look of the Saxby settings. Par is now where it should be for all of our corals, and I'm thrilled with how the light turned out.

We've also ordered a Clearview Lid for the tank, and it should show up just before our fallow period ends.

Zebrasoma didn't make it through accidentally overdosing copper while using the API test kits... We switched to a Hanna checker and brought the copper back down to 2.08 ppm, and everyone else has been happy and healthy since. Tomini was showing signs of HLLE on his head, but that dissipated once we got the copper levels back to normal.

The fallow period ends today, and the 30 day QT copper treatment ended last weekend. We're currently out of town for the weekend, but our tank will have fish in it again in the next few days! The Clearview lid we ordered is taking a bit longer to get here due to COVID-19 likely, so we'll use the ugly screen top we got with the tank purchase in the meantime.

Once the fish are out of the QT, we'll do another water change in the DT, then use that water in a water change on the QT to bring the copper levels back down to 1ppm. The next group of fish that will be going in there will be another Zebrasoma, Melanarus wrasse, and whatever my wife falls in love with at the LFS.

Here are some quick update videos of the tank and the QT residents:
