Hello! would like to hear some thoughts on if I should replace my filter socks to a filter media cup.
I tried with fiber then floss and went right back to socks

Absolutely, yes! I use Sera Filter Wool as the media. Cut into small pieces and rinse the small particles from the cut carefully. It doesn't have to cover ever hole on the media cup. As long as the water is running through it, this wool material collects just about all the debris making the water crystal clear! I stopped using the socks years ago, hahaha.

I have been using filter floss in media cups for a year now. Love it and would not go back. Its disposable and cheap. I estimated I used about 10 dollars in floss in the year. The floss at the bottom of the cup wont get dirty so you could reuse that when you swap or do what I do and put some media at the bottom of the cup. I use matrix but anything will do so you don't have to fill the entire cup with floss.

Its doesnt catch as much as a sock or roller mat but its the right cost, efficiency and maintenance combo for me.

im quite new to this. can you explain what poly-fils are/is?
I believe this is the exact one I bought a year ago. At this point I still got a lil more than half the box left. You can get poly-fil at places like Wal-Mart,Target,and art and craft stores.

i have a roller filter and im happy with it except the cost of the roll. it uses 1 entire roll a month. would filter sock be a better option?
It would be cheaper, just means you have to change the socks every couple of days, if you don’t mind doing that, then save the money and don’t use the roll.

please tell me how to use it in the sump?
I replaced my 7 inch filter sock with a 7 inch media cup. Inside I put in some media like carbon, chemi-pure, and purigen. At the top layer I put some of these poly filter. They're durable, cheap, and easy to replace. I would replace it once or twice a week.

Not my pic, but similar to this. Filter media of your choice at the bottom, poly filter on top. You can get media cups at BRS or other online retailers. Make sure you get the right size. I think they come in 4 inch or 7 inch version.
