Holy crap! How do y'all have smallmouth? Are they restocked annually like the trout? Some larger ponds in my area do trout every fall, but they all die off in the summer. It's too hot for smallmouth here, so it seems odd that they would be ok in the desert.

We have largemouth, white, and striped bass. For catfish we have blue, channel, yellow, and mud. Lot's of bluegill everywhere, plus crappie (or as yankees call them, white perch).

We have costal fishing too though which is primarily rainbow trout, redfish (red drum), and flounder. Of course, there's all kinds of stuff in the ocean, but those are the primary game with people go for. Lighting into a monster bull red is a blast! The suckers get huge and are strong as crap! You light into a good one and you might fight it for a good 15-30 minutes. They see the surface and just start stripping out drag. Not me in the photo, but just wanted to show a pic of them for size reference. The Texas record is just under 60 pounds.

We only have small mouth in a few of the lakes around here but they're native - no restocking. We've got black and white crappie. Flathead, channel, and blue for cats.

I'd love to do Drum and flounder.

We may make a trip out there for some pig and deer in December this year but it'll probably be next year instead. My tech has a friend with a ranch but I'm not sure where in Texas it is. Supposedly we can do pheasant and turkey while we're there as well.

I had to google those mussels. Look to be a pest. Can you eat them at least?
They're small so I've never tried. I would imagine they're edible but the majority we find are only about a half inch so it'd take a bunch. Now the invasive crawfish we have are edible and I've done a couple pots of them boiled and dipped in some lemon butter with a little garlic.

Oh yeah. Plenty of birds to shoot too.

My brother nailed a 34 pounder this spring on the second cast. What a fight! I was talking to him a few minutes ago about y’all having smallmouth bass. He said he’d gladly trade a smallmouth fishing trip to put you on anything you wanted to hunt here. Neither one of us have ever seen a smallmouth in person.

Never caught one! My in-laws have caught a few. Supposedly they get massive, but the biggest we've had in the boat was only 5 or 6 pounds if I recall.

Gross. There's only one acceptable way to cook crawfish.

I cooked mine lakeside. Fresh.

Your brother ever do Aoudad Sheep? That looks to be a rugged hunt. They say there's a couple of small wild populations out here. Came over from Nevada, Utah, and got released near Tucson somewhere by a rancher.

Respooling a couple of reels right now. Two of my buddies asked if they can use one of my rods and reels tomorrow. I figure I'll bring 7 or 8 so I have enough to use it everyone borrows mine

Ah ok. I don't think that smallmouth get as big as largemouth though.

Side note, the record largemouth for Arizona is 16lbs 7.68oz and the Texas record is 18.18lbs. I would have thought y'all had a larger record due to longer warmer seasons.

I think small mouth are shorter and fatter than large mouth.

Our striped bass get bigger though.

So I'm on the phone with my brother now, and I completely forgot. He used to guide those hunts in Rocksprings, TX. Once he had his son he stopped outfitting though. He tracks them free range too. Like you said, very tough hunt.
