Thanks for the clarification, to be honest, I probably would have made many of the same mistakes, since knowledge of dinos is limited and identification is difficult, it's no surprise this hobbyist tried everything in the book to try to beat what he called brown snot/slime algae.
The question is, did and can Cuprisorb beat them?
Removing iron could possibly stop them but I like I said its a thin line since all algae require iron. Could end up killing all aglae and the corals too...
Like I said earlier though I do see dinos in areas where there is excesses iron in the tap water. Very well could be you lower iron enough dinos may stop.
Fact is in tank with fuges I saw less dinos. I believe the macros can out competed the dinos for some nutrient or nutrients. But when nutrients got lower (phosphate) dinos took off but macros can not survive at lower nutrient levels. What were they competing against? Could have been iron. Very well macros can out compete dinos for iron but not phosphate.
Also in my early days of reef keeping I never saw dinos and in them days it was normal to grow macros right in the tank for nutrient control and nutrients were much higher in our tanks back then than what most people have now.
This also explains why when people start lowering nutrients dinos get worse. Add phosphate remover dinos get worse, do more water changes dinos get worse.
Here is a kicker though I have seen post where people have claimed adding iron to their system cleared up dino's.
here is the thing everything on dino every thing is Anecdotal.
