Did you plan for a manifold - before you needed it?

Did you regret not having a manifold?

Planning my plumbing, and trying to look to the future while keeping it simple as possible to prevent leaks.

Considering if maybe I should add a manifold incase I want to run more in a few years. Thought is I can leak test it before it’s on a second story carpeted room, rather than taking out unions and adding it.

Unless it’s really not common on non monster tanks and I’m yet again overthinking.

Right now I only plan on maybe a carbon reactor, and maybe a skimmer down the line since they seem common. I mainly want chaeto and will be running a fleece roller on a 65g & 25g sump.

I wasn’t planning it for three parts — one I barely knew why anyone would use it until now, two - now idk if I’d need it, and three, I originally wanted simplicity to keep the tank as leak proof as possible. — so of course I’m questioning my choices last min again.

What would you have ran off of it, and did you end up just getting extra pumps?

I don't run a manifold. I just have individual pumps running everything. I use Sicce pumps very compact and work great. Plus sometimes you my decide to change things around and its nice just to pick something up and move it without having to re-plumb.

I was thinking the manifold would limit vertical space and placement too if you don’t have a giant setup.

I planned for a manifold on both of my tanks. They are very handy for chillers and UV sterilizers, among other things.

Mine is a 90 Gallon on a 6 foot stand plenty of room. I just end up adding stuff and then moving it, and sometimes find that I change my mind and go with something else, or in a different direction altogether. Individual pumps make this easy.

So you're buying a pump per each "stuff" ?

The problem with a manifold is that when the back pressure from one reactor changes the flow rate changes on all the others. If you need a few things tightly controlled then it can be a pain constantly rebalancing it. If you are running less flow dependent stuff then it's fine.

Yes, What's wrong with everything having its own pump? This way I Know it is getting the flow it needs, and I can see that with my controller, also I can disable anything with the controller, at any time. It works for me. I am not saying manifolds don't work. But for now and at this time I don't use one. Sometimes simple is smarter. It is one opinion/option.

Spent a lot of time/money building one but never use it...I should have known better since I'm more of a KISS kind of reefer.

If you're running all of those devices at the same time then that make sense to me. If you're having pumps just sitting in storage waiting to be put into use tho.... That's expensive

I do have replacements waiting around just in case of failure, but I usually will swap them if removing something and adding something else.

UV, and reactors. granted, you can just plumb these individually once you get them, but that'll add clutter to your sump area which the manifold reduces.
