This is a Bi-valve often confused with a clam and comes in on wild rock. They are a short lived filter feeder and a member of scallop family

I doubt a clam. Does look like a scallop of sorts. What size is that for reference?

Give a little history on the rock and your mothers system.
Agreed - this looks like a scallop of some kind.
Bivalve is a general term for members of the taxonomic class Bivalvia, which includes all clams, oysters, scallops, mussels, cockles, etc.
Bivalves are all creatures in the taxonomic class Bivalvia; all clams, oysters, mussels, scallops, cockles, etc. are bivalves differentiated by lower taxonomic classifications.
