Hey, so I’ve had a slight rough patch with my tank the past couple months. Most things have been fine, but it all started when my pink hammer decided to start receding and 2 heads slowly died off. I dipped and removed the dead heads and now it is all healthy and good. It was not brown jelly, but it seemed like STN perhaps. But my other green hammer I’ve had for more then a year started having a worse issue, and it looked like it was trying to do polyp bailout. It looked fine, but suddenly looked terrible. It had looked like it was splitting so I was gutted by this since it had 2 heads and was not likely heading toward 4-5. I dipped it and everything, and it looked decent for a while, but suddenly… it did polyp bailout. It looked like it was splitting into 3 heads from 1, and it looks like 2 out of 3 survived and bailed out. There’s a bit of skeleton attached, but it fully detached on its own, and I dipped it and attached it to a frag plug (where knock on wood it’s looking decent).

So this is all insane to me, but some of my acans over the past couple weeks to month have slowly been receding. It’s weird though, because my acans have always done well, and my other 3 acans have look unphased. But this is similar to my euphyllias since my frogspawn I’ve had for about over a year, has looked amazing despite my 2 clowns hosting it. So strange to say the least. I think it’s maybe due to the corals not being glued down, but having large bases. So occasionally an urchin may knock the base a bit and maybe the corals weren’t happy about occasionally moving a bit here and there. Not sure about my acans though. But I feel like it’s due to stress and maybe hermits, I feel my hermits may be playing a part in some of this. Since I sometimes see them on or near my acans, and I think if they were slightly stressed, the hermits would start picking at them.
But I think it has to be them since my plate coral which has looked great just suddenly looked like absolute…. Well like this when I got home. It looks horrible. And I dipped it and put it back in the tank in a lower lighting location so it can hopefully recover :( but I feel my hermits are looking very suspicious after the plate coral. Like this is super strange. I need to do more testing, but my Monti Caps look great, birdsnests, and Stylo.
Along with my Xenia, and my other LPS. So this is super strange, it’s not like it’s a lack of nutrients or whatever.

Random question: How long have you had those ricordia? & Do you run carbon, or other absorbtive media?

If the plate "goes", keep the skeleton in place. They sometimes resprout many new clones from the "dead" skeleton! Same for the euphyllia's.

Yeah, I'm definitely going to keep the skeleton if it doesn't make it.
I dipped the coral, and it looks decent today and maybe a bit better compared to yesterday, but it looks very rough.
I got most of those Ricordeas recently. I've had them for 1-2 months.

I got most of those Ricordeas recently. I've had them for 1-2 months. I run carbon occasionally. I used to use it a lot more, but I have a lot more coral now, and I feel it may be taking out too much stuff if I'm constantly running it. But I love using carbon. I usually add a very small amount Phosguard media with the carbon (mostly to take out a bit of metals if there are any). But I tropic marin carbon dose so I don't use much absorbent media. Purigen is pretty good too (but I haven't used it in forever).

I asked because I wondered if this rough patch may have started, or coincide with addition of those ricordia in the picture? I have some that have began to thrive while corals (sps, lps) have not been that happy either? Coincidence?

Yeah, I'm not sure. I think it's a coincidence maybe. My Monti (Digi, and Caps), birdsnests, stylos, and other soft corals are doing really well. So I don't know. One of my newer Zoas is like shedding right now, but not exactly what it's doing or why. I'm going to just do my best to make sure my parameters stay stable and hopefully things will turn around.
It's just so weird that a few corals regardless of how long they've been in the tank look so so or bad. Very weird. But I have a lot and most look perfectly fine.

No one has asked for current parameters or mentioned the algae you have going on?

Algae I have going on?
And I've been super busy the last week and I've been slacking on testing. Over the past 2 months I've been pushing for higher pH.
But my alk is around 9.5-10.
I just got a new/better Calcium kit so I need to test that.
Mag is around 1300.
I need to test PO4, but it always hovers around 0.05-0.08 ish. Usually closer to 0.08. Usually doesn't climb above 0.1.
Nitrate is 4 - 5

But I do need to test again, and I'm hoping if I move the hermits and test A LOT/monitor things closely then in the next couple weeks things will start to improve.

Isn't that rock covered in algae in the background? Maybe the pic is misleading

Oh I didn’t think thats too out of the ordinary. But The lights were off so it looks a bit worse (and from this side view angle), but it’s just some sort of micro algae. Like the rocks have been that color for a long time. It is basically encrusted on the rock so it’s hard for the clean up crew to eat it.
But I don’t have hair or other very ugly algae or anything so I really could care less about this type lol
