DAILY QUESTION: What has been the biggest setback you've experienced in growing corals? How did you bounce back?
My first reef tank was a disaster, Started off as a FWLR and was doing great. The problems started when I decided to grow corals. This was before the internet and abundance of information. I basically slowly killed every coral I added to my tank. Lighting appears to be the culprit, I have armed myself with information and better lighting this go round

DAILY QUESTION: What's your thoughts on nutrients in a reef tank? Are they good or bad? How do you manage them?
I will be staying away from 0 and 0 levels. I do have a filter roller and fuge on my set up so tweaking will be needed. I also plan to dose AFR once corals are added

DAILY QUESTION: What has been the biggest setback you've experienced in growing corals? How did you bounce back?
DQ9
I moved
I wasn’t as prepared as I thought
I lost pretty much everything except some zoas, my fish and my Sherman’s.
After the move I let the tank settle back out.
I added an auto doser for Alk.
My life was pretty busy between work and school so I didn’t do anything with the tank (about 2 years) until February of this year. Now I’ve added uuummm I believe 145 corals since February….oops lol.

DAILY QUESTION: What's your thoughts on nutrients in a reef tank? Are they good or bad? How do you manage them?
It’s about balance. The corals need the nutrients. The fish need to eat! I’ve seen tanks with high nutrients and no algae and super happy heath corals! It’s when they bottom out that issues can be seen.

I don’t manage them they manage me lol. Only time I worry is if I start seeing Dino’s on the sand. I had this issue and it took a few weeks of not just over feeding but dosing liquid nutrients (and vacuuming the sand bed through 5micron filter) to get the tank back on track!

So I manage them by over feeding and keeping my filter socks rotated and my refugium going strong! I also have a ton of rock in my sump, and don’t forget the PODS!!!

DAILY QUESTION: How important is flow in coral growth? What have you found to be the best way to get the right flow for keeping corals healthy and thriving?
DQ11

Goni and hammer garden needs to not be blasted!
Essentially all corals need indirect flow
Need places with lower flow (so diverted by rocks!) for those more fleshy corals.

Flow keeps detritus from settling on corals

DAILY QUESTION: Do you feed your coral? If so, what are your favorite coral food and feeding techniques? If not, why not?
DQ12
Yes, sometimes, when I think about it.

I try to feed the gonis every other week with Gonipower.

I’ll feed the other corals with that and a mix of mysis and a bit of the Gonipower on the same day. This happens on the same day I’ll change the filter socks.

Otherwise I tend to feed the fish with a premade fish food from my LFS that has smaller particles that the fish ignore so the corals can catch it.

The clowns feed the nems!

I plan to feed my corals. I'll most likely try spot feeding with a turkey baster first. As for favorite coral food, I have to yet figure that out once I start feeding them.

DAILY QUESTION: How important is flow in coral growth? What have you found to be the best way to get the right flow for keeping corals healthy and thriving?
Flow is critical. Every time I clean my gyres, the tank just seems to wake up again. I try to make my flow proportional to lighting. So my powerheads intersect and provide the most direct flow at the top of the tank, with indirect currents across the bottom.

I feed my LPS with mysis when I feed the fish frozen. I’ll occasionally use powdered foods for target feeding like reef roids.
