are you using vet prescribed CP? i've had ich remain or come back on fish in CP from the ebay seller, fishman chemicals, NLS ich shield, and fishremedies - all of which source their CP from china. while there are many things that could have happened here i dont know if the fallow time is the culprit of ich in your tank. if using CP, one really needs to look at securing a prescription from a vet. it can be difficult otherwise as often time in qt symptoms may appear and go away and one may think it's the CP from china being effective when sometimes it is not.
No it will kill anything that's not a fish basicallyA stupid question, but can cp be used in a reef tank to prevent algae?
Humblefish, I QT and treat every new arrival with CP regardless of signs of disease or not. Long story short introduced 3 frags that's sat fallow since Jan 1, 2 weeks ago Saturday now all my fish have Ich. I treated the tank with 60mg/g of CP 3 days ago but the fish all still have spots, but the macro algae in the tank is dead but the soft coral frags are still alive. Is it safe to say the CP isn't working for whatever reason or should I wait it out longer? In the past I feel like the spots were gone in 3 days, hence why I'm concerned. (It's actually been 72 hrs at 6pm today) I have a storage container with sand in my sump for my mangroves, do you think that's causing the CP not to work? I have worked SO hard to make sure my fish are disease free and now this. Moral of the story is fallow times mean crap since after 8 months the Ich is still there.
If heterotrophic bacteria are present in sufficient quantities, that will rapidly biodegrade CP (and other medications.) This is why CP will sometimes fail if used in a non-sterile environment. Learning of this has motivated me to figure out a way to safely disinfect a long-term QT in-between batches of fish: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/using-chlorine-to-disinfect-a-qt.262358/
obviously I can't use chlorine in my DT so I guess I will be using copper. So mad at myself right now...
I dosed CP straight into my fowlr DT without issue. The Chinese crap was just that, crap. It made a dent but not enough, came right back. Bought the prescription grade through vet and eradicated botch ich and velvet, though ich can always easily come back but killed the velvet without issue - it has been nearly 1.5 to 2 months since I last treated the tank and everyone is doing great. Chinese crap, like everything else, is just crap.
I dosed coppersafe in my DT, my vet is closed until Monday so I can't get a new RX until then. I will at least have the good CP on hand. New Life spectrum has worked without issues in my QT setups but isn't working in the DT. I dosed 45g of it in my 625g with 210g sump (actual water volume is closer to 650-700g so over the 60mg/gallon dose
Lesson learned with that. Although I'm not sure non Chinese CP would make a difference since the bacteria is there to break down the CP.
To be clear, I suspect the culprit is more likely to be anaerobic bacteria than aerobic. So if you stop and think about it, there aren't many places for anaerobic bacteria to exist in a rockless QT with no substrate. Different story in a DT though.
so is there any truth that CP is light sensitive? Can I use an LED over the QT or is that not good?
Will this work on mandrains ? Or is it the same effect as copper?
Can one keep a qt runnung all the time fishless, without any meds? Especially for rare fishes that dont arrive frequently. Then dose cp for qt.
Yes, but i prefer hob, coz of salt creep and sound running a sponge filter. Premixed water is better then mixing new water after fish arrives.Sometimes I leave my quarantine tank running fishless, but most of the time I take it down.
What I do is to have a sponge filter powered by a air pump running in the sump of my display tank, so when I do need to quarantine a new fish, all it takes is to mix up new water and drop in the sponge filter.
I also try to have new water made before ordering fish online, or making a trip to a store where I'm looking for a specific fish.Yes, but i prefer hob, coz of salt creep and sound running a sponge filter. Premixed water is better then mixing new water after fish arrives.
