I went down that rabbit hole myself. Based on research I did the red iron oxide I link to below maybe be GFO. I wasn't confidant enough myself to put it in my tank though.

Thanks. I think I give up and just go with RowaPhos. I did check some bulk products, the price is maybe cheaper but I have to order in bulk, hence the shipping fee will be massive...A diy involves finding a distributor and buying a large amount. It is not an ordinary chemical, but a high surface area material made specifically for water purification (removing arsenic from drinking water was the original purpose, I believe).
It can go under the trade name Bayoxide 33.
