Tank size requirements are all subjective and guesses anyway in my opinion. I’m a diver and have seen many tangs, angels, and other predator fish being advertised needing xyz gallons in our hobby. Tangs get so huge and fat in the wild, I personally think a 12’ tank should be minimum, but hey that’s just me!

I am just not sure why a BTA would need 50 gallons. It doesn't make sense to me.

To some degree, yes because each tank is unique but past practice affords general care guidelines for reference purposes.

I don't think it's gospel but more of a general reference because each tank is unique.

There are examples of thriving BTAs in 15g tank - it's not like the BTA is missing out on swimming space. As long as it has several different flow/light areas to choose from, and somewhere to "hide" and anchor, I don't see why tank volume would really matter.

I guess larger tanks = fewer swings, and also more space if/when your BTA spreads like a weed, but otherwise...I think meeting it's requirements are more important than a gallonage number (unlike many other nems that legitimately need large foot prints).

I've always agreed with this. I will never understand people who put a yellow tang in a 4' tank, even if it's a wide tank. That fish has so much more potential.

There's a dinkus on this very site that put something like 13 blue/regal tangs in a 4ft tank for a laugh and killed half of them. Why some people even get into animal care is beyond me.

15g is actually 10g with rocks though right? I don't have BTA in my tank just 5 RFA's and even they move around as needed.

I only posted a simple Google search find as a reference.

Are you sure there is not any science going into these recommendations? I am not saying they are bulletproof, but you are saying that someone is just making them up. Is that really what you think?

Yes absolutely , just do a couple search on any fish, tangs specifically, and you will find at least a couple different tank requirements.
There isn’t a science behind these recommendations because, as far as I know, no one has done the experimentation on raising baby fish from the same batch, and put them in different tank sizes and observe and take data in over 15-20 years. I hope you see my point, but if you don’t, then it’s all good.

I started reading that thread and bailed because it was so ignorant. Your being polite calling them a dinkus.

There you have it,
just do a couple search on any fish
trust the internet...

There is archaeological evidence that humans have been keeping saltwater fish for about 4,500 years. There certainly must have been some science conducted along the way to support better practices and equipment.

Companies like ORA could not do what they do if they did not rely heavily on science.

Most people (scientists included) do not understand what actually constitutes science. Scientists don't always agree on the significance, validity and applicability of the results of experimentation.

Science was never meant to be and never has been definitive.

I waited two months too before I added the kessil a360x. So it’s been on since June 1st and I’ve already got a ton of coralline algae :)

It’s a real shame dry rock has become the norm. I’ve setup two nanos now since returning to the hobby 18 months ago (14g and 7g) and used KP aquatics wet live rock for both. No ugly phase and both had a variety of corals in within a week (once it was clear there was no major die off from the rock) including acans, zoas, plate coral and RFA. It’s not instant mature tank but it’s surprisingly close.
