I'm in SW Cape Coral(just west of Ft. Myers), only a few miles from the coast but we have Sanibel and Pine Islands kinda shielding us from the gulf. I'm in flood zone B, I think they issued a voluntary evacuation for zone b and c, zone a is mandatory. My house sits about 3 feet higher than neighbors, so I think I'm OK as far as surge goes. I got most the shutters up, 4 windows to go but it's raining. Parked the batmobile, and have about 45 gallons of fuel in the suv for generator.About 15-20 min from Hernando Beach - depending on traffic at the time. I forget, where are you again?
We're trying to decide on shutters ourselves... Waiting for it to straighten out so we know where it's hitting for sure. The longer it hangs out by the Yucatan Peninsula, the further north they expect it to land. Good news is as it approaches we can expect a drop in wind speeds, this is going to be a wet storm though so if you're close enough to the gulf where surge is a concern that'll be what you need to plan for. We're far enough above sea level (despite being close to the coast) that we're outside of all evac zones and we're not in a flood/surge risk area.
Pretty much everyone from Citrus County down to Ft Myers area needs to watch local guidelines and listen to what's said. Even if winds slow down as expected, it's likely going to be rough and so much of our ground is still oversaturated from the surge with Helene.
We have some of our old neighbors from Oldsmar coming to stay with us to avoid the surge risk.
That souls run the generator for 4/5 days. my neighbor, who is a sheriff deputy, has access to their fuel after the storm.. It's going to be rough but I should be fine. I worry about others. But the have the islands evacuated already so there shouldn't be hundreds dead(like when ian hit us). Wishing everyone the best of luck
