Day 7 Cycle Update
Dropped another $50 on test kits (thumbs down), but now feeling better about the status of my water params (thumbs up). Here's what's happened:
So the good news is ammonia is down, and now all eyes are on nitrite. Per Dr. Tim, he suggest that NO2 above 5ppm can stall a cycle, so my reading of 3-4ppm has me wary to add a final dose of ammonia. I'm going to give this another 1-2 days to see if it comes down, and if so, I'll add a final round of ammonia. In order to consider this tank cycled I'm watching for NH3 = 0, NO2 = 0, and ideally, have them both show a 0 reading within 24 hours of dosing ammonia.
Lately I've been reminding myself of the old saying, 'a watched pot never boils'. Patience...

- Picked up a Red Sea ammonia kit and an API nitrite kit. Both of them are substantially easier to read the results vs the Salifert test. Honestly, this is an underrated area that I didn't really bother with researching before I bought kits, but it can make a big difference. Why are they 'better'? Because their color gradient varies enough that it's easy to get a relative reading. With Salifert, it seemed like a pure guessing game.
- API NO2 test is reading around 3ppm
- Red Sea NH3 test is showing below 0.2ppm (good news!)
- Since I was at my LFS, I had them run an API digital water analyzer on a sample ($8? Why the heck not ), and below are the results. Seems to line up fairly closely to my own readings, so gives some level of confidence in where my cycle is currently at.
