I have a blue hippo tang that's about 4.5" now that was raised from about 1.5". Had it in a 90g and now in a 6ft 180g and it has always just swam and stayed in the middle 1/3 of both tanks. Never swims the full length of the tank and never goes into the various caves. When frighten it just darts right into it's usual sleeping hole. The other tangs, Powder Brown, Scopas, and Bristletooth all swim throughout the full tank and enjoy swimming in and out of the caves and arches. Is this normal behavior for hippo tangs since it's commonly said that they swim vast distances in the wild to graze?

Who lives at the ends of the tank? He likely isn't allowed there...

No one afaik since all the other tangs swim anywhere they wish without harassment. Plus the Hippo and PBT are 2 biggest fish and they leave each other alone.

Sometimes I think it depends on what type of water flow and how you feed. My Sohol (6-7") keeps to left side of the tank. That is his territory and doesn't really care about the rest of the tank. Only to show who's boss and chase them to the other side. He could go anywhere in the tank and no one really challenges him. I have the flow of the tank such that most of the water goes from right to left in the back of the tank behind the rock (plenty of room for the fish) so in the front the flow is left to right. Many of the fish like to basically stand in place facing left against the current sometimes and just pick off food floating towards them. I feed with pumps off in the Sohol's area so that is probably why he's staked a claim, but he';s not aggressive when I feed.
