Good morning everyone. This introvert is still recovering from lots of "togetherness". I'm looking for help. see below

Good news first:
Fox face seems to be doing ok. Pecks at rocks, eats frozen, so far hates nori. I'm convinced I got the only Fox face that isn't a vegetarian

Bad news. I bought 25 trochus snails on Wednesday from LFS and I don't think any of them made it past 24 hours. :( all the rest of the CUC I purchased seem to be fine. That's a lot of wasted money on snails. :(

Assistant needed.
Stupid Dinos are trying to come back.... UGH!!!!
Heres what we know:
Kind: Ostreopsis

Parameters
PO4- .1
NO3-10
Alk-8.4
Cal- 420

A few weeks ago I went full black out for 3 days and have only been running blue lights since. I have run zero other color spectrum for over 3 weeks!

I am thinking about going full black out and trying a UV but honestly im tired of throwing money away and dont want to pull the trigger unless others agree. This is the one I am considering.

Other options I am considering is dosing silicates but I don't know if that is the right course of action for Ostreopsis. I also think I am dealing with Chrysophytes which might explode of I dose silicates. :(

Welcome back! Sorry to hear about the snails- that blows. I would not dose silicates, or the diatoms will, as predicted, explode in numbers. Continued light restriction and UV are your best course of action here, especially if you are positive the ID is Ostreopsis.

As an aside, what are you using to test your nutrients? They seem to be on point (maybe raise NO3 a bit <15>).

I'm using red sea pro for PO4. I use salifert for NO3 and have cross checked with red sea pro NO3, they seem consistent. I've been trying to get them up to around 25 at least. I've had dead shrimp in the sump for over three weeks and having been feeding the foxface twice a day to encourage pooping. I have also been dumping skimmate from the biocube when possible, but that skimmer sucks.

Do you have any thoughts about that UV I linked. I'm really limited in the kind I can use without going full plumb mode, and I don't really want to do that.

So, it is basically the Green Killing Machine from AA. They work well, for what they are. The 24w is a good size. Also, they are an AIO unit, so the internal pump is set to the proper flow rate. I would pull the trigger if it doesn't break the budget. I would also purchase a spare bulb during the cyber Monday sale to have on hand.

Keep up with manual removal / siphoning and light restriction while running it. Dinos are a PITA, as I'm sure you know. It will just take persistence.

I had a little bout with dinos as well early on in my journey, I didn't microscope ID them, but they were the kind that went into the water column at night. I started with mostly dry rock so mine just absorbed nitrate and phos like sponge. Note that this occured during my 29g reef size (before I switched everyone to a 75)

1, I kept feeding and monitored nutrients with testing. I wanted No an Po. I did end up dosing brightwell N and P for a little while until I finally had detectible levels. I only did a water change if other levels were dropping since I did have coral already.

2, I added a UV sterilizer and only ran it at night. I used the green machine type.

3, I manually removed big clumps that I could see with a rigid airline section with a flexible airline attached like a mini tank vacuum siphon thingy.

Not an expert but this was my tactic and I did beat them. And they did not reappear when I did my upgrade even though I added more dry rock.

I currently dont use any filter socks... should I get one and stuff it with filter floss or something else to try to absorb the dino particles?

Thanks!
Wait. When did the avatar change voting session occur? I must have missed it?

Good question. It may be counter productive if you're looking to raise nutrients. So, I'm not sure.
