Welcome back to the hobby. I'm getting back into it after a 35 year hiatus. There definitely has been alot of changes and improvements but alot of the old ways are still relevant. I'm sticking with what worked for me then. DSB and metal halide lighting but I do appreciate the WIFI pump and wavemaker controllers. That’s an understatement. Talk about a learning curve

Deep sand bed. It's another method of reef keeping. Not real popular right now but it does a excellent job of keeping a tank stable. I think as technology advanced it fell out of favor but I like the simplicity and my most successful tank back then had a dsb. There are a couple good books on the subject if your interested.35 years, wow! What is DSB?
Hello All - I wanted to introduce myself since I’ll likely be posting a lot in this forum. I’ve been out of the hobby for about 20 years, got back into it about a year ago. How things have changed. I had a 90g before that was doing pretty well, but had to move, bought a house, had some kids, and never picked up the hobby after. I still have a little treasure trove of equipment in my basement, albeit 20 yrs old. My new tank is a 180g peninsula rimless. I’m going through the usual growing pains with a 1 yr old tank, hair algae, re-learning what to do and how to cope. I read this thread (https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/should-i-just-restart.1057368/page-7) and it’s exactly what’s happening in my tank. I’ve got a fuge, nice skimmer, UV light, Apex controller, and AI lights. I’m run the lights on the lower end hoping that will not encourage algae growth. Also have a Duncan colony, Leather, Torch, Candy Cane, Monitpora, and Kenya Tree. A couple tangs, two clowns, a couple pajama cardinals, sand sifting blenny, and a couple others. Looking forward to the challenge and discussing topics with everyone here. Thanks!
I had a deep sand bed in my 90g. At the time, someone at the lfs recommended that was the way to go. Had the metal halides too, in a DIY canopy. I can say one thing for sure, my 90g never had an algae problem. Don’t know if that relates to my issues now. Maybe that was beginners luck.Deep sand bed. It's another method of reef keeping. This is just my opinion but, I think alot if the algea and dyno problems are directly related to not using real live rock and a sand bed. I do not remember anyone having any of these issues back in the early to mid 90's. Maybe a hair algea outbreak here or there but it wasn't a common occurrence.I had a deep sand bed in my 90g.
