I'm SLOWLY researching a new system I'm planning, which will be a 40B mixed reef with a 20L sump. I've been out of the hobby for over 10 years, so the changes/advancements while exciting are a bit overwhelming. I like the idea of the automation and monitoring capabilities of the Apex controllers, but am rather confused on what exactly they are capable of. Specifically the Apex Controller Base Unit and the EB832 Energy Bar. I've read the stickies at the top of this specific forum as well as browsed the Neptune forums. But it all seems to be more on how to set these systems up versus what each actually does.
With that said, I have a few questions....
- What is the EB832 capable of as a stand alone unit?
-What is the Apex Controller Base Unit capable of as a stand alone unit?
-What would I gain by having both?
The things that I, currently, believe I'd like to have automated and/or monitored is the following....
-Auto light cycle with ramping up/down (DT and Sump lights)
-Wavemaker/Pulse settings for powerheads (probably 2)
-ATO control w/monitoring to prevent sump overflow or emptying of ATO container to prevent killing the pump by running it dry
-Water level monitoring in sump to indicate clogs/leaks and the ability to shut of return pump to prevent flooding of the DT and/or sump based on sump water level.
My biggest reason for considering a controller of some sort is to detect and then prevent a flood. Everything else will be a bonus. I don't think I'm interested in things like auto dosing but am unsure if I want the ability to remotely monitor things like temp, pH, salinity, etc.
Is there anything I'm missing that anyone considers a must have automation and/or monitoring situation?
Thanks in advance!!!!
