I just had a chromis and a clown in this tank when I added the purple dotty. Chromis and Clown immediately swam up to the dotty and they did a stare down. I could tell the dotty was getting more aggressive swimming around the whole tank. I added 3 Anthia’s and a tailspot and that calmed/ kept the dotty in check. Now the Dotty just stares at them out of jealousy as they all swim in the current together. Sometimes joins them for minute. No nipping for both parties.

Gotta echo this. If given another opportunity, My orchid would not go in the tank. Both a bully to the flasher wrasses, and likes The Taste of snail from time to time.

@hisuzeq Depending on your ability to maintain a large population of pods, You may consider just one Mandarin and see how it does first. If you get a male first, you can add a smaller female after the fact if you think it's appropriate

Mandy's eat Constantly. One decent size could wipe out your population in that tank within a week or two without a safe breeding space. Even having a fuge, You may still have to supplement pods once a month which does get expensive quickly.
I've read a lot of things that say mandarins work best in pairs, so that's the only real reason I considered 2. If he can hang alone, I'm definitely fine with one!

They have to be mated or at least opposite sex. I’ve read that other two spot but not mandarins…Interesting

I would say that 8 or 9 fish in a 30 gallon is not feasable, and will likely result in aggressive fish, or jumping fish, or worse, diseased fish. I would try to stick to 5 or 6, thats just me.
Do you know if firefish need to be in a pair, or can one be happy alone?

They do Hunt in mated M/F pairs (which makes them more efficient predators) (which will knock out your pod population faster) but I don't think there's anything that says they need to be. There are many many tanks with one, Fat and Happy Mandarin.

I would forgo the pseudo. Fridmani. They are exquisite but a dotty. Biota captive raised mandarins are more easier to feed. Chk out Jake adams video. His were tearing into flake food.
Sry for grammar. Lol. Just saw that. Wow

just got a pic of mine. She’s usually camera shy. Weird thing is the Dotty and Mandarin swim by each other and it doesn’t phase either one of them. Almost as if the other isn’t there. But all the other fish get very attentive if the dotty swims by. It’s almost like all other fish seem to be cool with the mandarin….

That’s the more aggressive dotty. I was always partial to the Fridmani View attachment 2535894
It was my fault when I got it. It was label Strawberry Pseudo…I was in a rush and dottyback never crossed my mind. I knew the scientific name but it didn’t register until right when I put him in the tank.

But hasn’t really been a issue since new fish were added. So I can’t really say I regret it…Yet! I do have sexy shrimp and if the strawberry dotty gets one, it’s fish sticks for dinner!

Hahaha. She better steer clear then! More like fish stick though... not a lot of meat on those bones.

I have a ton of odd i n my tank but I just started “breeding” them by feeding them Phyto in a container with a air tube. I take our cups of Phyto and pods and dump in tank then add fresh water back to breeding chambers. Feed Phyto until water clears up. It gets too expensive buying pods by the bottle.
I need this setup, help a guy out, lol How did you do it?
