I bought an annularis angel fish a couple weeks ago and I noticed right away it had a little bit off its fin and it changed color and got worse and worse. It’s back fin is pretty bad and the side fin is very small and atleast had fin rot.
I put him in a 10 gallon qt that was uncycled and I dosed maracyn 2.
Do you think that is the best treatment for fin rot?
Also it says perform a 25% water change at day 6 but my ammonia is starting to rise and I don’t know if I can do a water change or not
Oh yeah and he always has ate very well.

Yes Macaryn 2 treats fin rot. I prefer Kanaplex but any antibiotic takes a few days to start working.

Regarding ammonia, you'll need to conduct a very large water change (60-70%) with the same salinity and temperature to keep the water quality pristine. This is crucial above all else. Clean water can be the difference between infection or success.

Just treat the body of water with the medication that you are replacing during the water change to ensure the medications are at proper therapeutic levels.

I also suggest getting some vitamin supplements to soak the fishes food in such as Selcon. It will help boost the immune system.

This is not fin rot but rather definite aggression from another tankmate and you must identify the culprit before it gets to be severe.
The powder blue I see could be the very one but often best way to tell is to set your cell phone on video mode for about 30 mins and drop a little food and walk away - YOU MUST walk away as they know youre there. Often the aggressor is a bully at feeding time. Review the video and see who it may be

I will try that when I edventually have him back in Dt. I haven’t seen any type of aggressiveness between the two they both kind of kept to themselves but I will see.

Maracyn 2 is minocycline. All of those “…cyclines” are deactivated by calcium in the water. Despite what the label says, there are more effective antibiotics for use in marine tanks that are high in calcium. Neomycin and Kanamycin are two.

Do you have any cycled biomaterial you can put in the QT to better manage the ammonia? Seed rock, sponge filter, anything like that?

No, that’s not long enough. No rock rubble or anything?

I’m gonna do a big water change to lower it in a moment.
Water changes help, but without bacteria, it will just keep rising. I’d say if you can get 2 or 3# of good reef rubble in there, that would handle the ammonia from this fish.

If he doesn’t have fin rot should I put him back in Dt? Also if he doesn’t have fin rot should I stop dosing maracyn 2 or does it help with healing? I also have melafix which says it helps with healing
Also what vitamin supplement is best for my situation?

I’m worried that if you put it back into the DT, the same fish will attack it.

Vitamins are not a substitute for antibiotics, and they can be overdosed. If the fish is feeding well on a balanced diet, you don’t need extra vitamins except thiamin and vitamin E if those haven’t been added to the food already.

Neomycin or kanamycin are more effective antibiotics in marine aquariums.

I haven’t added any Thiamin or vitamin E atleast directly and im pretty sure SELCON is mainly Hufas and the vitachem has the thiamin and vitamin E.
I heard that SELCON is better for sick fish though is that true?

Short term, it is really just calories that the fish need. Just like people and chicken soup, diet doesn’t cure disease. Selcon is an issue itself. It seems to get its name from INVE’s SELCO. However, SELCO needs to be kept refrigerated, and only keeps for four months. I’ve never gotten an explanation as to how then the HUFAs in Selcon can be shelf-stable.

I only have a 75 gallon for them so I’ll need to upgrade very soon but since I’m 14 I’m a bit broke. I hope to get atleast a 100 gallon for Christmas though.
