First time poster, longtime reader of reef2reef!

I currently have a 29 gallon FOWLR tank that I've had for two years; I've had a lot of success with it. I love this hobby, and I'm now ready to get a large reef tank, probably in the 125-170 gallon range (i.e., just big enough to house a tang or two if possible)

I'd like your input on a used 140 gallon acrylic aquarium that (I think) comes with just about everything I'd need to get the system up and running. Here are some pictures and details:

  • 140 gallon custom tank with 5/8 in. acrylic (72Lx24Dx20T). It's three years old and is currently with the second owner. He is unsure what brand of tank it is (could be a DIY tank?). The only known issue is scratches the current owner says I can get out.
  • Custom stand
  • 30 gallon return tank utilizing filter socks
  • Skimmer (Octo)
  • Auto heating system with 2 heating elements (300 w each)
  • Maxspect jump dc8k return pump
  • 10 gallon rodi top off tank
  • 2x icecap 4k gyre pumps
  • Hydros ATO kit
  • Hydros single doser
  • Hydros X4
  • Hydros wave engine
  • Hydros power strip
  • pH and ORP probes (details not mentioned)
  • pH, alk, nitrate, calcium, phosphate, magnesium salifert testers (details not mentioned)
  • Refractometer
  • Hanna pH and calcium test kit
  • RODI system
  • T5 lighting system
  • Reef bright blue LED light
The current owner states a lot of what comes with the tank is less than a year old and will come in its original packaging. The current asking price is $2200.

So what do you all think? Is this worth it? I'm paranoid about a tank busting, and I've never had an acrylic tank before. One thing to note - the tank is more than 2 hours away, so I can't easily stop by and see it in person.

I'm debating if I should jump on this opportunity, or just save up to get a Waterbox, Innovative Marine, or ProStar aquarium (~150 gallon display volume), as I've heard great things about all three of them.

I appreciate any advice you can provide!

Not a bad deal. I’d ask for some better close up pictures of the bracing and all the corners. But 5/8 plastic is a good sign it was quality built. And you can buff out most scratches. Just plan on not filling it right away if you want to buff them out

Thanks for your input! I decided to go ahead and make the purchase after receiving additional pictures from the seller. The system looks even better in person than I expected. Now I just need to buff out the scratches; they aren't deep, so I'm going to try NOVUS 1-2-3 first before doing any sanding.
