I finally got a response from the school today. I don't know why it took them two weeks but I guess mentioning palytoxins got their attention. They saw a lot of dead inverts and no live fish (no dead fish either, but I'm not optimistic). The Dean of students couldn't tell if the corals were alive or dead but I'd assume dead.

Does anyone have tips for cleaning up and starting over?

This really sucks.

Really sorry, I would just do 100% water change, maybe replace the sand bed and let things stabilize. Remove the dead obviously and clean up the algae manually.

I assume ceramic filter media and carbon and stuff would need replaced too right? Could I reuse the rocks?

You can use the rocks. In fact, bacteria are resilient and the rock will still be live.

So just clean it up and replace the water then give it some time to stabilize.

Wow. I guess I should definitely avoid any harsh cleaning chemicals like bleach then?

Yes, no reason to?

Dead bodies are not going to ruin your rock. It just may have dead corals or sponges that need to be scrubbed off.

When we used to buy live "boat rock" - it was covered in dead material but came back to life with care.

Yeah that's a good point. I'm just be worried about the toxins and stuff that corals release when they're stressed and dying, as well as pathogenic microbes feasting on the dead stuff. I had a ton of different zoas and palys so palytoxins are also something I'm concerned about.

The toxins won't be leaching from your rock. Just wear protection for yourself, clean it up and change the water and add new carbon.

If you bleach the rock, you will be starting from scratch. It is probably more valuable to a healthy tank to keep it alive.

Another note, I also have no idea how you would bleach rock in a dorm... you would have to do it outside or somewhere with ventilation and leave it out there but somewhere safe from people or animals? That doesn't even seem like an option to me because it is a public space.

My dorm building used to be a hotel in the 70s. There's a balcony I was planning to use if needed.

20 gal is easy. Get all the rock out scrub and put aside in good salt water. Dumpt the rest, water, sand , dead animals. Flush them all down the toilet (just dump the sand and get new sand if you have/want to keep a sand bed.)
Scrub the tank and equipment and remix the salt and start over.

Just to add to help with the palytoxin (PLTX) concerns:
"Activated carbon adsorbed 99.7% of PLTXs contained in the seawater and this represents a good strategy for preventing aquarium hobbyist poisonings."
From An aquarium hobbyist poisoning: Identification of new palytoxins in Palythoa cf. toxica and complete detoxification of the aquarium water by activated carbon

So we assume GAC helps mitigate the toxin in the water,

This really sucks.

See if your local news will do a story featuring an interview with you.... then have a gofundme page to promote yourself at the end of your story.

If you get the local news to AIR this story of interest, I bet the gofundme donation will fill up to.buy you a 2nd tank.

Local news love stories of interest outside the normal everday news. They love human interest stories

Sell them the drama of not being able to get back to your pets. Every good human interest story has drama and chaos..

Good luck

Unfortunately I couldn't get accommodations in the area when we evacuated. I'm not close enough to pop over there and do that. It's about a 6 hour drive from where I'm staying. That's why I'd like to bribe my friend in the area to go but she doesn't have a room key.
Any way you can relocate now to temporary accommodations that are closer? Might give you the chance to get in there and save whatever is left. Sorry this happened to you.

Unfortunately not. They aren't letting anyone on campus, no exceptions. If they would have just allowed people on campus, my tank would have been totally fine. My LFS and a few friends in the area volunteered to take care of the tank but security wouldn't let them in.

I've been informed that the school is going to send me pictures of the aquarium so I can file a renter's insurance claim for the dead stuff.

Should I post the pictures here or is that gross?

How do determine how much the tank was worth? Just literally adding up how much I spent on stuff? A lot of the corals were given to me or exchanged for other stuff, and all the big name online purchases I made were during sales. If I purchased everything right now from an online retailer like Top Shelf Aquatics or World Wide Corals, it might be 2 or 3 times more expensive than what I originally paid. Do I go with those higher values or would that be fraud?

Has anyone ever filed an insurance claim for a dead tank? I had no idea that was even a thing.

What about a friend that can get your "medication", that's local to Tampa, maybe that someone reading this can help out with a backpack of distilled water even, while getting your ahemmedicationahem.

Tldr; I was hit by two hurricanes and my school kicked me out for an entire month. My tank was left behind. What should I expect to see when I return?

Hey everyone!

I'm a college student in the Tampa Bay Area in Florida. My college is a marine science college literally right on the Tampa Bay. We were hit by Hurricane Helene and then again by Hurricane Milton, and our school forced us to evacuate and closed down after the catastrophic damages. It reopens in a week.

My 20 gallon mixed reef tank was left behind because I was only given 36 hours to make evacuation plans and I didn't expect to be gone this long. I couldn't bring the tank with me. My tank has been totally abandoned since September 27th. My ATO water reservoir containing RODI water and Kalkwasser was due to be empty today but might have emptied sooner due to the backup bubbler I have running in case we lost power. My fish feeder will likely run out soon. I'm not allowed to return until Saturday, October 26th (6 days from now).

I know my equipment stayed working during the first storm because I was able to get a professor on campus to check on it for me after Helene, but he didn't do anything other than ensure everything was turned back on. I have no idea what is working after the second storm or what survived in between the two.

What should I expect to return to? I have lots of coral variety ranging from pest corals like kenya tree, gsp, and xenia to LPS like favites, micromussa, avans, and euphylia, and even SPS like montis, pavona, and acros. I only have three fish, two clowns and a yasha goby, and all three eat pellets. I have 2 rock flower anemones and a bubble tip anemone. I have 3 sexy shrimp and a candy pistol shrimp. I'm not sure if the anemones or shrimps will eat the pellets or not.

The acros are the most upsetting part to me. I recieved 8 awesome acros from Adam at Battle Corals literally the same day I had to evacuate. I ordered them before Helene was even on the radar. They aren't even glued down yet and are just sitting on a magnetic frag rack in a tank with an urchin! What are their survival odds?

What can survive neglect for that long? Is there anything I should just assume is totally lost? Has anyone else experienced something like this before? I'm really worried and bummed about everything and I'm not optimistic about what I'm returning to next Saturday.
Where the bubblers still working? what are nutrient levels? Have the soft corals split? have the electronics come back online? how about a picture?

I don't have any of those details for you. I'm not allowed back until Saturday. All I know is that I was called by the Dean of Students yesterday and informed that it seemed like everything in the tank was dead. The coral didn't look like it was alive and they saw no living fish (no dead fish either, but let's be real here. They probably didn't make it) and lots of dead inverts. I don't know about nutrient levels, electronics, or the status of the soft corals and I haven't recieved any pictures from them yet. My last update was a few weeks ago and all the electronics were working then, but we got hit by a second hurricane since then.
