Hello all,

Been contemplating doing a build thread for a bit now with my new set up but when I saw the separate cube section, I knew it had to be done. What's the worst that can happen right, some helpful tips and education come my way, plus a great way to document things and post some pictures. All great things I think. I'll try to keep the pics coming at a good pace, everyone loves the pics right. And this tank has been cycled and running for a month or 2 now so we are well under way but far from finished.

Little about me. Well I'm Canadian so this little slice of reef won't need a chiller lol. Been reefing for the last 4 or 5 years with my previous 90 gallon. When I really got started with aquariums though was at a really young age. My dad was a freshwater tropical fish enthusiast to say the least. We had "the fishroom" with maybe 50 or 60 tanks downstairs full of livebearers, rainbows, cichlids, corys. Thousands of fish so naturally I was a cichlid fanatic at a young age. And naturally I got a job at one of the big LFS's as a teenager, mid 90s for reference. Freshwater fish were cool by me at the time and the reptile aisle I can't say interested me much but my lord when I got introduced to the saltwater aisle, well I was hooked. I just couldn't get enough of it. The store had a 200 gallon display tank with a gold flake angel and 3 purple tangs. They were amazing. I had a saltwater tank going at home in no time, except on a teenage budget. A yellow tang, canister filter, a couple florescent tubes, t8s or 12s or whatever those old things were lol. It was great and I even raised some bangais that ended up breeding. And then after high school, well, life happened. The good times, jobs, careers, travelling, more good times, all that stuff got in the way.

Fast forward to 4 or 5 years ago and I'm settled down and thinking of adding a new hobby. Well wouldn't you know it my parents have had a bowfront reef ready 90 gallon in their basement just collecting dust. Away we went and things started to go together, the internet and forums like this were sure handy, definitely wasn't the case back in the 90s lol. My dad had even got started building a stand for the tank but never finished it. He did so much fine woodworking in his older years it amazed me really. With a little trim and stain, plus siliconing a little sump together and things were ready to go.

This tank was a lot of fun to get back into a hobby I loved some 15 yrs ago or more and to see how much has changed. I experimented some with the tank, mainly lighting and then after a couple years the sps bug hit. As is natural, I started planning for an upgrade. But this last summer though took a toll on the tank. Split with the significant other, I work out of town lots and for long periods of time also. We got back together pretty quick actually but now I was living at her place and had to think about moving my tank real soon. Or would it be a perfect time for the big upgrade? Well, I happen to have this awesome little 60 gallon cube I picked up a year or 2 ago, for no particular reason really. I just liked the tank, it was cool, and a good price as it was used. So I thought I would work on setting it up at the new house and the big upgrade could happen maybe down the road.

With the old 90 one thing I was enjoying was the SPS. I started running metal halides, upped my flow, ran ESV Bionic 2 part and things were good. Hopefully with this new cube things will go to that next level. Here's a few more pics from the old 90, then we'll get to the new build.

Beautiful corals. Love the colors!
Thanks,
The tank the last year or 2 was really hitting its stride and I was really getting into sps. And then this last summer things just weren't working out. Was hardly ever home. Was at work lots, staying at the sweethearts place, at the lake lot we got. I was always stopping in when I could to check things and clean things up but it was 1 step forward and 2 steps back and the tank sure suffered.

Now we're getting the new cube broken in. I did some work in the garage in October on the stand, building the light support arms and adding the black acrylic bottom and some new black silicon to the tank. Took a bit of elbow grease getting rid of the old cracked acrylic bottom which I soon discovered had been installed to cover up the overflow holes in the bottom of the tank. What an ungodly amount of silicone they used wow. But it got done plus got the new cube sump all fabbed up.

The pic with the bit of silicon and the blade doesnt come close to describing how much silicon was in there.

So back in October I got a little break between jobs and while trying to get packed and moved to the new place I got some work done in the garage. Added some lighting arms to the stand, put a new black bottom into the cube, got the cube sump glued together, got some old rock bleached and cleaned and cycled. This was all on a real tight schedule as I ended up getting my house rented out real fast so I had to get my old 90 moved right away

Sorry if I'm jumping all over the place lol.
Here's a couple of pics from October and getting the new cube wet. Then maybe we can go over some equipment choices. My awesome dude Memphis is always on hand and I think is just happy he has his old couch back lol.

I built a big sump. One thing about the old 90 is it had a small sump and I always wanted more space there. Especially with going bare bottom I wanted a big fuge for pods, bacteria and all that great stuff.

I can't be friends with him, his tank actually has water in it ;) ;Hilarious

Looking good @RCS82 ! And that bowfront actually makes me want a bowfront, that stand is stunning!
Thanks for the great comments, the bow front worked to get back in the hobby but its was tall and narrow. It had its challenges as far as aquascaping and water flow was concerned. The stand was also built a long time ago and was more decorative then functional, but it worked. With the new cube I wanted to solve a list of problems I had encountered with the bowfront. The new metal stand had plenty of height and I built a new sump to fill the whole space underneath. Equipment and dosers and such can go on the outside.
Believe me, I still have lots of work to do with equipment, cord management, power bars, improving the aquascape, ATO to still install, adding my doser and maybe a kalk stirrer.

Sounds like a great time to go over what equipment we'll be using and maybe get some feedback or suggestions.

One thing I liked to play around with on the old 90 was lighting. No I didn't change lighting every month but there were some changes thru out the 4 years or so. Initially I started out the the basic 2 360WE Kessils, they were nice but after a while, more could be done. The Aquatic Life hybrid setup wasn't on the market yet but I found a 4 ft 4 bulb T5 fixture and drilled 2 - 4" holes right thru the top. Dropped the kessils in and ran 2 of the T5 bulbs. It was a great improvement. Then after while I added a 4ft XHO Reefbrite clipped to the front. Loved that too. Then I got thinkin, why do I need these 2 Kessils that cost so much when I can just put the other 2 T5s in. So I ran a 4 bulb T5 with the Reefbrite. Results were great again. But I've always wanted to do metal halides. The natural look, shimmer, spread, spectrum, color blending was hard to beat. So the T5 fixture came off and 2 hamilton pendants with 250w 14k Pheonix bulbs went on, plus the Reefbrite for the wow. Jackpot, loved the look.

I always liked the LEDs for the ramp up and down and some coral pop so the cube will have a 250w Phoenix for main lighting with an XR15 Gen4 pro on the front for the fun stuff.
Skimmer wise will be sticking with the Eshopps. Its been great for 4 years and not much to talk about there. Will run a small Sicce 2.0 return pump with a pair of Tunzes in the tank. I have a pair of 6095s which were good but added a a pair of 6105s to the 90 a year or 2 ago and they are great broadflow, controllable workhorses. Will be setting up my GHL doser2.1 coming up. It has been a great dosing pump the last 2 or 3 years. Never one problem or glitch, love it and it looks so nice too.
That's the basics for now. I have a few things planned for the future. Picked up a Smart Aqua AWC system that I'd like to try out. As well I've been looking at the IceCap magnetic kalk stirrer. I've really liked using kalk in my top of water for the ph boost and 2 part support. No controller yet, I've always tried to keep things simple and I'm not a crazy tech fan. I like the old approach of skimmer, rock, good lighting and now a big fuge.

Looks awesome! Glad I've settled on a MH/LED setup for my new build, they really make an amazing combo!

What kind of combo you planning to do?
Tank dimensions? Bulb/reflector info? LED info?

Pretty much what you had run on your older setup, still debating on the wattage though, 150/250W Hamilton Caymen Sun Reflectors running most likely 14K bulbs (What brand I haven't decided yet, most likely Phoenix though). 2 Custom Orphek Blue sky 48" LED bars....

Tank is a Custom Built peninsula measuring 60" x 30" W x 17" H

That sounds fantastic. If I do an upgrade to a bigger tank that is more of the footprint I want. 30" front to back. I would strongly consider the 16" Coralvue pendants over the 12" Cayman Suns for that big of tank. Also would go 250w for that size tank. The 14k HQI Phoenix bulb I think is at the top of the heap and can't be beat.

I'll have to look into the Coralvue ones, I just went with what was the most popular option it seems. My aquascaping will be somewhat centered in the tank with lower light corals on the outer edges so I was thinking the spread would still be okay.

Time for an update. It's been a while lol.

Busy holidays, worked outta town November/December, then gone for a week for Christmas. But the last few days been making a little progress. Mostly with hooking the RODI unit up and making new water with some new water storage bins. Just general organizing, unpacking things, straightening things out. Got some optical sensors and pumps for a AWC system, the smart aqua system I think it is. That should be fun. Other than that been loving doing a new set up in an unfinished basement, it's like total freedom and no rules lol.

The tanks been not doing a whole lot. Its cleared up some so of course I played around with the aquascape, again. On attempt 4 with that I think. Always ends up with the pile of rock look lol. But it's better and will leave it for now.

Here's some pics
