I bought a spectra pure four stage RODI unit last May and my TDS is reading 52 on the out put and 96 on the input. I am just wondering if there is any one who would know which filters I should be changing and when. I am a big time rookie when it comes to these RODI units. Thanks big time in advance.:surrender::surrender:

I would replace all go with bulk reef supply. Don't need to replace ro membrane. Also. I would but tds calibration fluid to test your tds meter

I think the RO membrane definately needs to be replaced. RO membranes remove a percentage generally around 95-97. So if you have 100 going in you should have 2-5 coming out. This is measured before the DI. 300 tds in then 6-15 out. And really thats all a TDS meter is good for. People claiming there output is 0 should read this
FAQ FOR REVERSE OSMOSIS

so if your rejection rate is around 50 percent that tells me either your ro membrane is shot, or a slim chance you don't have enough pressure on the line side of the RO, probably not the case if you are on a municipal water system

The prefilters should be changed every 3 months or so to extend the life of your RO membrane

If your RO TDS output is that high then your DI resins will be quickly exhausted, so it needs changing as well.

I personally run 3 DIs behind my RO. About every 6 weeks I change out the first one and move them all forward in the line so the new cartridge goes in the last position. But I am a fanatic about pure water

I thought if you have really high tds water coming in or you have an auto-shutoff valve and float valve (tds creep) that the ro membrane can last 2 to 3 years

That I am not sure about, I change mine out every year. I am sure maintenance plays a huge part on the life span. If you don't change the oil in your car how long do you think it will last? The micron filters probably just keep it from plugging but the carbon is important to remove chlorine which will destroy the membrane. Once the carbon is exhausted you will kill the membrane so if he did no pre-filter changes there is a very good possibility that chlorine destroyed it

If you bough the unit in May its still under warranty and you need to consult Spectrapure. If the IN probe is installed correctly and is reading the RO only water this tells me you have a problem with the membrane which should not be. What is your tap water TDS? If you don't know for sure and don't have a handheld TDS meter, cut a short piece of 1/4" tubing off from somewhere or if you have extra then disconnect the OUT probe tee from the treated water side and temporarily install it on the incoming line to get a reading.

Have you ever run hot or blended water through the system? What is your pressure? Did you take the time to trim the capillary tube flow restrictor to 4:1 when you first set the system up? Measure the waste ratio and tell us what it is today. What is your water pressure? What is your water temperature? Have you recently moved the system or dropped it possibly dislodging the membrane in the housing?

Before you replace anything at all take the time to answer the above questions as they will all be asked by Spectrapure when you call them.

My unit has a in and out reading on the TDS the in is 96 or around there and the out is now at 84, the temp is really cold going in and I am not sure how to fix that other than putting a line from the hot and a line from the cold and putting them together on a y into the unit? I think my problem is that I ran my waste line outside and it froze. Durrrr. Anyway I ordered a kit with a replacement of everything including the ro membrane and am planning on setting it up with the drain indoors. I know duh. So I did set the thing up with a 4:1 ratio in the beginning and I dialed in the pressure right because my unit has a gauge on it. So I know thats probable confusing but I hope you get what I am saying. I guess I just need to know if the temp going in is alright or how I need to remedy that? I hope this fixes it and I am glad to have all this help Thank you everyone.

Definitely need all new filters if your TDS meter is reading correct. If you have cold water (40 or below..) and low water pressure it could take some of the efficiency from the membrane as well. The spectrapure site has all the info you need.

Where are the IN and OUT probes placed? Are you reading tap water TDS and RO TDS or RO TDS and RO/DI TDS?

If the membrane froze that would be a problem for sure as they are fragile.

DO NOT, let me repeat, DO NOT!!! mix hot and cold water with a RO or RO/DI system. That is the fastest way to melt or ruin a membrane there is.
Remember being in the shower when someone flushed the toilet or started filling the washing machine? You got your tush scalded and that exactly what will melt a membrane in a heartbeat. They can only stand up to 113 degrees and thats not all that hot, all it takes is a few seconds and they are toast.
